A woman has revealed the secretive process that led to her starring on a Netflix show alongside comedian John Mulaney.

Catie Maillard posted on LinkedIn to reveal how she went from ‘Nothing to NPR to Netflix’ attributing ‘luck and preparation’ to her rise and making it to TV.

Maillard was a guest on Mulaney’s talk show, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney, which airs every Wednesday night on Netflix.

This saw Maillard appearing alongside such celebrities as Johnny Knoxville, Bill Hader, and Chelsea Peretti.

The Netflix show features experts each week, with previous episodes having featured a Cruise Ship expert and a licensed Funeral director.

Maillard appeared on this week’s episode as an ‘HR expert’, and gave her six steps on how she managed to do it.

The HR expert posted the following six steps: “1 - I saw a posting in one of my HR consulting networking groups call for HR practitioners for a podcast on layoffs.

“2 - I'd been seriously considering starting my own podcast to help employees understand what's actually going on / how decisions are made and why, so responded as a way to start understanding the podcast process.

“3 - Turns out this was for the Proxy Podcast with Yowei Shaw - they interviewed me and chose me for the role, and the podcast was later picked up by NPR's Planet Money

“(Yowei is a former NPR employee and creator of Invisibilia - her layoff from NPR started this whole experiment!). 4) 1 year later, I get a random email from producers, who had gotten my contact info from NPR.

“5 - I actually IGNORED the first email (note: my house had just burned down in the Eaton fires, so checking my personal email was not high on my priority list), though the follow up email came through on a slow Friday so I was able to jump on it.

“6 - Producers interviewed me and somehow decided I'm fit for live tv (we shall see....).”

She pointed to herself making a ‘conscious effort to say yes and show up’ to what led to the luck in making it onto the show.

This led to her appearing on the show, with viewers calling in and getting advice on stories involving their employers.

John Mulaney has spoken about the show, promising to ‘never be relevant’.

He said at a Next on Netflix event: “We will never be relevant. We will never be your source for news. We will always be reckless. Netflix will always provide us with data that we will ignore.

“Not since Harry and Meghan has Netflix given more money to someone without a specific plan."
