As the final season of Netflix’s Squid Game releases, the attention of many fans will turn to the announced upcoming American spin-off.
Though Netflix have kept their cards close to their chest, the finale of the upcoming series gives a hint to what the American version may entail, along with existing knowledge we have about the series.
The American Squid Game is set to be directed by Mindhunter creator and Fight Club director David Fincher, something that, for many, is reason enough to get them hyped for the upcoming spinoff.

Now, with Gi-Hun’s story coming to an end as season three releases today on Netflix, here is everything we know about what comes next in the Squid Game universe.
David Fincher set to direct the American Squid Game

The most substantial news announced so far is that Fincher is set to lead the spin-off. He is a near-household name at this point with Mindhunter, Fight Club, Se7en, and The Social Network.
Sources close to Variety envisioned the American English-speaking spinoff of the Korean show to be the project that the director works on throughout 2025, so it is likely his next project out. Whilst a date has not yet been announced, it would be expected that the show is set to release in the back end of 2026 at the absolute earliest.

Dennis Kelly, the writer of Utopia, the cult classic British show, is reportedly going to be penning the script for the movie.
The show's creator, Hwang Dong-Hyuk says he was not told about the spin-off officially, but supports the idea of it. He said in an interview with GamesRadar: "I've also read news about David Fincher taking on a spinoff of Squid Game, and it isn't something that's been shared with me officially.
"Having said that, as a big fan of David Fincher, you know, I hugely respect a lot of his work. If he actually were to do the spinoff of Squid Game, I personally, as a fan, I am very excited to see what happens. You know, I can't wait to see what he has in store."
Squid Game season three finale twist sets up American spin-off

If it wasn’t obvious by now, this is a massive spoiler warning for the final season of Squid Game.
In the final episode, the Front Man ends up in Los Angeles for reasons that are far too spoiler-filled to put in an article on the day of the season’s release.
As he drives along however, he hears the sound of ddakji hitting the ground.
Rolling down his window, he looks out and sees a recruiter in a suit playing ddakji with a man, slapping him across the face every time she wins.
This is not the recruiter from Squid Game we know though, as they turn around to reveal Cate Blanchett.

Due to the Front Man’s surprised face at seeing her, fans can assume that he had no part in the game’s American expansion.
It also sets up the Hollywood A-Lister to be the first name seemingly cast in the show.
The original Squid Game is the streamer’s most watched show of all time, with the second season sitting at the number two spot in the all-time non-English list, above Money Heist.
With this in mind and Blanchett seemingly set to appear, fans should expect a stacked cast for the spin-off as Netflix continues to try and make the most of the success of the Korean show.

This is not the first time Blanchett and Fincher would have worked together either, with the Australian actor having starred in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
