Nicole Kidman Hits Back At ‘Sexist’ Question About Ex Tom Cruise

Nicole Kidman Hits Back At ‘Sexist’ Question About Ex Tom Cruise

She was surprised when the conversation took an unexpected diversion into her marriage to ex-husband Tom Cruise

Nicole Kidman became ‘angry’ during an interview when she was asked a ‘sexist’ question about her ex-husband Tom Cruise, even choking a little on her drink because she was so surprised.

Kidman is currently promoting her new film Being the Ricardos, based on actor Lucille Ball, who was married to Cuban-American star Desi Arnaz between 1940 and 1960.

In a new interview with the Guardian, Kidman spoke about her takeaways from portraying Ball - and her ‘very relatable’ relationship - explaining how the film is ‘about a creative and romantic relationship that doesn’t work out’, and how ’from it come extraordinary things’.

But she was surprised when the conversation took an unexpected diversion into her marriage to Cruise, who she wed in 1990 before divorce came 11 years later.

Kidman said: “This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever.

"Yeah, that’s really gorgeous. You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. And I think that’s all very relatable. You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love.”

In the article copy, interviewer Eva Wiseman writes that she asked ‘with exquisite care’ if this is the actor’s ‘way of talking about Tom Cruise’ - something that prompts her to choke on her water.

Kidman replied: “Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no.”

At this point, Kidman was ‘angry’, according to Wiseman.

“And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either,” Kidman continued.

“It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”

Kidman and Cruise got married in 1990 after meeting on the set of Days of Thunder the year before.

They adopted two children – Isabella, 29, and Connor, 26 – together, before Cruise filed for divorce in 2001, citing irreconcilable differences.

Kidman has since gone on to marry country singer Keith Urban, with whom she has two children.
