Seven Kings Must Die: Cast, Plot, Release Date

All you need to know about The Last Kingdom film, Seven Kings Must Die

The hugely successful, world famous Last Kingdom TV series has finally come to an end after the 5th instalment of the show was released back in March.

However, there’s no need to panic as this won’t have been the last time we get to see Uhtred son of Uhtred and the rest of the beloved ‘Last kingdom’ characters on screen.

It was announced back in 2021 that although season 5 would be the final chapter of the TV series, the story itself would wrap up with a feature length film after the show was complete.

So with that said, here's everything you need to know about The Last Kingdom film, Seven Kings Must Die…

Seven Kings Must Die Release Date:

Although there has been no official release date for the new movie, we can make a pretty good guess as to when it will be out.

Filming recently wrapped up in Budapest, Hungary, meaning we can realistically expect the film to be out at the earliest late 2022, but more likely in early 2023. So, what we do know is we won’t have to wait too long.

Regarding how to see the new Vikings and Saxons film, you’ll be able to watch Seven Kings Must Die on Netflix, as soon as it’s released.

Seven Kings Must Die Plot:

The ‘Last Kingdom’ is based on Bernard Cornwell’s ‘Saxon Stories’, the beginning of the show is pretty similar to the books, with the story and events being largely the same.

However, by season 5 the series diverges so much from the books, that it probably isn’t particularly helpful to use books to predict the plot of the new movie.

Season 5 is so loosely based on books 9 and 10 of Bernard Cornwell’s series, that they have become two very different stories.

The fifth season ends with Uhtred agreeing that Northumbria will become an independent kingdom, acting as a buffer zone between Alba (Scotland) and the newly forming England.

This of course strikes tension between the hero Uhtred and King Edward, who is set on fulfilling his Father’s dream of a united England. So, it’s expected to see some sort of clash between Uhtred and Edward.

However, Producer Nigel Marchant stated “In terms of Season 5, we felt these two central strands of the story were coming together and it was the natural point to finish the TV series…Season 5 does feel like the end of the TV series, and the movie will be much more standalone.”

So although the film will feature aspects of the Last Kingdom’s plot and many of the familiar characters, it won’t follow on in the same sense that season 5 followed from season 4, instead we may see the movie tell its own new story.

Seven Kings Must Die Cast:

We know a few of the stars who will definitely be returning for the new movie, the most obvious being Alexander Dreymon as the hero Uhtred.

However, Eliza Butterworth who played Ealswith has revealed she will not be returning. The 28 year old revealed, “I have to say, I have had a conflict of scheduling…So, I was meant to be in the film and it gutted me because I got another job which is the one I'm currently on now.”

Looking at the rest of the cast, here who was left alive at the end of season 5, and could be returning for the movie:

  • King Edward – Timothy Innes
  • King Constantin – Rod Hallett
  • Eadgifu – Sonya Cassidy
  • Aethelstan – Harry Gilby
  • Aelfweard – Ewan Horrocks
  • Father Pyrlig – Cavan Clerkin
  • Aelfwynn – Phia Saban
  • Lady Eadith – Stefanie Martini
  • Abbess Hild – Eva Birthistle
