Top Gun: Maverick has been named the best film of 2022

Top Gun: Maverick has been named the best film of 2022

Tom Cruise's epic sequel has beaten an impressive list of movies to sit on the throne for this year.

The cinema overlords at the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures (NBR) has revealed what they think has been the best movie of the year.

There are so many to choose from.

You've got Black Panther 2, Don't Worry Darling, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Blonde; the list goes on.

However, the Board of Review, who is a non-profit organisation of New York City area film enthusiasts, believes it was Tom Cruise's epic Top Gun sequel that takes the cake.

NBR President Annie Schulhof said in a statement: "Top Gun: Maverick is a thrilling crowd-pleaser that is expertly crafted on every level.

There’s no shortage of belters showing at the moment, like Top Gun: Maverick.

"Tom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski, and the entire filmmaking team have succeeded in making an incredibly popular film that brought audiences back to theaters, while at the same time being a full-on cinematic achievement."

There's no denying that.

Maverick has brought in around $1.5 billion at the box office and proved Cruise has the star power to pull people into the cinema.

Maverick is set 36 years after the original Top Gun flick and centres on Captain Pete 'Maverick’ Mitchell (played by original cast member Tom Cruise) returning to United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program - also known as Top Gun - where he is forced to confront his past as he trains up a group of new pilots, including the son of his late best friend Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.

Alongside Cruise, the movie stars Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Jon Hamm. It also stars Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s deceased pal Goose.

The actor appears in Top Gun: Maverick out on May 27.

The Associated Press says the movie, its cast and crew have a serious chance when awards season rolls round early next year.

The NBR also awarded Best Cinematography to Top Gun: Maverick's Claudio Miranda.

Colin Farrell was given Best Actor for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, Steve Spielberg was named as Best Director for The Fabelmans and Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The Banshees of Inisherin picked up two other nods, one for Brendan Gleeson for Best Supporting Actor and the other for Martin McDonagh for Best Original Screenplay.

Other movies that got a shoutout in NBR's Top Films category include Aftersun, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, RRR, Till, The Woman King, and Women Talking.
