The trailer for new Chinese horror film Abyssal Spider has got people more than a bit on edge.

Set for release on 11 September, the movie is directed by Joe Chien and it follows the crew of a boat who become threatened by a dangerous storm. They soon realise the weather is the least of their worries, when they have to contend with a huge sea-dwelling arachnid.

As you can see from the trailer above, you don't even get a glimpse of the offending monster, but like all good horror films, the fear lies in the unknown.

Instead it focuses on the hysteric strategising of the characters as they attempt to figure their way out of what looks like a pretty deadly situation.

The official synopsis reads: "Rescue member Ajie (played by Wang Yangming) and his companions rescued a reef tanker in the storm, but met the captain who was stubborn and unwilling to give up.

"At the same time, a dark shadow haunted the deep sea and dragged everyone into the sea. The surviving Ajie from then on, bearing the shadow of the death of colleagues, became decadent and disheartened.

"When the trapped people face the severe test of the storm, they find that the most dangerous thing is far more than this. There are unknown creatures under the water... the savage people must put aside their prejudices and work together to survive."

People on social media have seen enough to make their mind up on the film.

One person commented: "It's like somebody went into my brain and took the two most things I'm scared about and put it in this movie."

Another said: "Guys. My two biggest fears are spiders and the ocean. I wish this movie luck and success because I will never be able to see it ever."

A third tweeted: "WTF is this - since when did someone get into my nightmares and produce a film?!"

Of course, with the lack of spider in the spider film, some who had watched the trailer on YouTube couldn't help but comment on the fact.

One fan though, quite reasonably pointed out the concept of suspense, saying: "Everyone complaining about there not being a spider in the trailer, maybe they're keeping the suspense of how it looks rather than putting the whole film in the trailer, not hard to use your brain guys."
