Teen's jaw drops as he learns life-changing value of box as expert admits 'I've never seen anything like it'

A maid had found the box wrapped up in brown paper in a servant's bedroom

Ah, remember being a young, semi-careless teenager? The days of saving up lunch money to fill up at the corner shop on the way home.

Getting your first payslip from your part time job and feeling like the richest person int eh world. When a £10 note in a birthday card actually felt like it could go far.

Well, prepare to be envious of this teen whose jaw dropped when he learned the life-changing value of a box as a valuation expert admitted they’d ‘never seen anything like it’. Although, the only catch is, it wasn’t actually his box to have his life changed by.

Either way, the lad rocked up for Antiques Roadshow when the BBC series visited Caversham, Berkshire, and John Foster admired the ‘stunning’ object.

“So over the years, we've seen on the Roadshow, quite a lot of stumpwork and needlework, stumpwork being the raised panel sections of this box,” the expert explained.

“You can date it quite easily to the reign of Charles II, so 1675-ish because his image is on top. Now how has something like this - because when we usually see it, it's faded, torn - how has something survived for so long in this condition?”

The teen explained the box was from Milton Manor in Oxfordshire where he works as a tour guide. “The house was unoccupied for 40 years,” he said.

“And then when the family decided to move back in, a maid discovered this in one of the old servants' bedrooms, wrapped up in brown paper and a tablecloth.

“She brought it down and said 'ta-dah!'”

And here’s the biggie, Foster said it’s ‘staggering’ to see as he noted the box is ‘museum quality at its best’.

“So, value, at auction, easily £50,000 to £70,000.” Wowza.

Understandably, the teen’s jaw dropped and he couldn’t quite get his words out as he was amazed by the revelation.

“Wow,” he went on to joke, “shame it's not mine, I can't believe it's travelled down in our car and it spent the night in our sitting room.”

The expert added that he’s ‘never seen anything like it’.

“And I don’t think I will in a long, long time.”

As far as dramatic reactions go, the teen was truly out down by a US army vet when he ‘passed out’ after hearing how much his watch was worth.

David had rocked up with his Rolex he’d bought on the cheap, only to find out it’s worth well over £300,000. More than just a jaw drop from that bloke
