Speaking to the New York Times about drafts of season three prior to Cloud’s death, Levinson stated that Fez was set to be the ‘backbone’ of the new episodes.
He said that the cliffhanger that ended off season two was going to lead to Fez being in prison, something he stated was at least partially in hopes that it would help Cloud go sober.
Levinson, who is himself an addict who has been sober for years, said: “Angus was the backbone of that season. I used to even talk to him about it because I wanted him to stay clean.
“I would invite him over and I’d tell him what the plans were for the character. I’d say, 'Look, he’s been in prison for a few years, so you’ve got to get that yoked prison body'.
“I wanted him to start working out and taking care of himself.”
He also stated that, at the end of each previous season he had planned to kill off Fez before changing his mind, saying: “I wanted him to have something to hold onto, a tangible goal for the future.”
Episode one reveals that Fez survived, but they don’t appear to be recasting the role
In the first episode of season three Rue reveals that Fez is alive, but in prison currently serving a 30-year sentence. She encourages Maude Apatow’s Lexi to call him, stating he misses her.
Speaking to Variety about the decision to keep the character alive, Levinson said: “There’s a lot of scenes where people are talking to him on the phone. I thought if I couldn’t keep him alive in life, then maybe within this show that I can control I could keep him alive there."
"The whole thing was a way to honour him."
