Hannah Montana's Mitchel Musso reveals why he skipped the anniversary special

Hannah Montana fans quickly noticed Oliver was missing from this year's anniversary special, now actor Mitchel Musso has explained why.

The 34-year-old starred as Oliver Oken, one of Miley Stewart’s (played by Miley Cyrus) best pals on the kids' show.

However, despite being a major part of the original Disney hit, he was noticeably absent from the anniversary special that aired back in March.

The one-off special featured Cyrus as herself, performing some of the songs from the show and taking part in an interview with Alex Cooper, as well as a number of guest appearances, including her dad Billy Ray Cyrus, mum Tish Cyrus-Purcell, Selena Gomez and Chappell Roan.

During a recent appearance on the Joe Vulpis Podcast, Musso said that he had hoped that the anniversary special would see the cast reprising their roles, but when it ‘wasn't presented that way’, he decided to opt out.

"The kid in me was banking on it, like, I can't wait for us to all be on set again and it just didn't work out that way," Musso said.

"Do something other than what was done ... Set's still there."

"They just did it differently and it and it is what it is. But ... it wasn't the right thing and I was busy doing something that was more important, right? But it would have been way more important if it would have just been an episode, or a movie, or a whatever. Of course, that would have been more important."

"It would have been everything, [I would have] dropped everything. Eat, breathe, sleep it.

"I'm there early. I'm flying in three days. I'm going to be there."

He went on to say that he was ‘of course’ asked but felt that it ‘wasn’t presented correctly’.

"And I've been waiting 10 years. You know, the people they say 20. My break's been 10. So, it's too long of a wait to do it in a way that isn't even close to, in my opinion, correct," Musso added.

However, there’s clearly no hard-feelings about his time working on the show, with Musso branding his co-star Cyrus as ‘one of the coolest people’ and saying she’s like a sister to him.

“It's not like I talk to Miley every single day, but you know the the once or twice a year that I do get to speak with her, she's my sister, you know what I mean? I'd do anything for Miles,” he said.
