Premiering in 2006, MTV documentary Fat Camp: An MTV Docs Movie Presentation is part of a bygone era of weight-loss television, where losing weight was turned into TV viewing.
Similar to programmes such as The Biggest Loser, Supersize vs Superskinny and You Are What You Eat, the TV film followed five teenagers who spent their summer at Camp Pocono Trails in Pennsylvania, attempting to shed the pounds and adopt healthier lifestyle choices.
The series was billed as one of the ways to tackle America's obesity epidemic, with statistics from UCLA Health revealing that around 40 percent of US adults are classified as 'obese', but it is now part of an era of television which is looked upon more critically.
So where is Camp Pocono Trails now, two decades on from the documentary airing?

What happened to Tony Sparber, owner of Camp Pocono Trails?
Camp Pocono Trails was run by Tony Sparber, who'd been in the business of helping kids aged between seven and 19 lose weight since 180, according to PR Newswire.
Tony featured in the Fat Camp documentary as the no-nonsense director and was not afraid to both inspire and reprimand campers and counsellors under his care.
After running Camp Pocono Trails for several decades, Tony retired from running the camp in 2024, announcing his decision to step away from the health and wellness industry in order to spend time with his family and write a book on his experiences.
"It has been an amazing 50-year journey of helping kids, teens, and young adults get into the best physical and mental shape of their lives while having fun and making memories that will last a lifetime," he wrote on Instagram. "We want to thank all the campers and the staff and parents that have been part of our years together.
Reflecting on his memories of running Camp Pocono Trails, he continued: "People ask us what we will miss the most? For us it’s the campers and the staff. The laughter, the smiles, the tears, the ability to watch them make meaningful relationships without technology. But most of all, to watch the campers and staff transform themselves through putting in effort and work and watching that effort pay off in becoming better humans. For us, it made everything we did worthwhile.
"Goodbye CPT and the camping world, it’s been a great ride…"

What happened to Camp Pocono Trails?
The camp underwent a number of rebrands in the years following Fat Camp and follow-up documentary Return to Fat Camp, later shifting to a health and wellness camp, promising campers support with their health, wellness and self-esteem, which had been 'informed by the latest research'.
In later years, the camp expanded to combat internet addictions, with a section on the website offering support for 'Internet Gaming Disorder' and 'Social Media Overuse'.
In 2022, the camp would experience tragedy when 19-year-old Lorena Lauer died in a jet-ski accident at the camp's lake.
The camp would ultimately close its doors for good two years later, when Tony and co-owner Dale Sparber made the decision to retire from the industry.
