Duffer Brothers respond as Stranger Things character 'completely disappears' in finale

Her disappearance didn't seem to be addressed by the others

The Duffer Brothers have responded as one of the Stranger Things characters ‘completely disappeared’ in the final episode.

After nine years, Netflix’s hit show came to an end this week with emotional scenes to finish fans off.

And while there might have been criticism over the lack of deaths or confusion over the fate of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), there was also some satisfaction in seeing where most of the core group end up.

With a subtle tribute from Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) we got to see the majority of the stars all in the same place at the Hawkins High School graduation.

Ahead of the finale, much of the Stranger Things cast spoke about how important it had been to have everyone in that big final ensemble scene. But it seems that wasn’t true for Vickie (Amybeth McNulty).

Vickie's disappearance

After we watch the gang defeat Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the Mindflayer to get everything on the ‘right side up’, we have a time skip of 18 months.

Robin (Maya Hawke) introduces us to this with a bit of a monologue from the radio booth – just as she did in the first episode of the season.

But in this time, it seems her girlfriend Vickie has vanished with the Duffer Brothers choosing to leave ‘it a little bit up to fans’.

We don’t see or really hear anything from her, leaving fans wondering what happened to their relationship or if she simply couldn’t be bothered travelling back from where she is to watch some kids she hardly knew graduate.

“How did they just write off Vickie?” one fan asked.

As another echoed: “What happened to her?”

Well, the only hint we did get was during Robin’s rooftop meetup with the core ‘older kids’ of Steve (Joe Keery), Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton).

And as her pal makes a toast ‘to nothing ever keeping us apart’, Robin chimes in ‘including overbearing significant others’.

What have the creators said?

So, it could therefore be inferred the pair did in fact end up breaking up at some point over the 18 months.

This was kind of hinted by the Duffer Brothers too as they explained they ‘did talk’ about where Vickie ended up.

But apparently, and arguably annoyingly, it’s up to us whether the pair are still together.

"We want to leave it a little bit up to fans in terms of where these characters end up ultimately," Ross Duffer told Entertainment Weekly. "Do Robin and Vickie stay together? Maybe, maybe not."

But Matt Duffer did suggest it’s not likely their high school relationship survived as he added: “From my point of view and from everyone I knew in high school, what percentage of couples remain together after they leave for college? Extremely low.

"Max and Lucas survive because their love is that deep, but very few others do."

Then Matt said: “But, you never know.”

Well, guess it’s up to us LADs.
