Paramedic's haunting remarks on Kathleen Peterson murder scene as ITV airs The Staircase

A paramedic made disturbing remarks about the murder scene of Kathleen Peterson.

The remarks have come as a drama on the infamous case, called The Staircase, has become available on ITVX.

In 2001 Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of the stairs at their home in North Carolina in the US, and her crime writer husband Michael Peterson would go on to be convicted of her murder.

A documentary had originally been released back in 2004, with updates to the case seeing renewed interest in 2012 and 2013.

After a fresh round of interviews, three new episodes were put together, and in 2018 Netflix released the original series along with the new episodes together as one series.

Four years after this updated version was released, HBO and Sky Atlantic again looked at the case, and a drama was commissioned taking another look at the story.

This stars Colin Firth as Michael Peterson and Toni Colette as Kathleen Peterson, with Sophie Turner of Game of Thrones also appearing as Michael's adopted daughter Margaret Ratliff.

After serving eight years in prison Michael would be tried again after a judge ruled that some evidence had been misleading, and following the second trial the charge was changed to voluntary manslaughter, and he was released due to time already served.

The case again in the spotlight as the drama series shows on ITVX, including remarks from a paramedic on how Kathleen was found after her death.

James Rose has been an emergency medical worker for 15 years, and said that one thing in particular about the scene left him shocked.

This was just how much blood there was, with James saying that there an 'enormous amount of blood involved'.

Speaking to a state briefing in a later appeals case, James said: “A lot of the blood that [was] on the walls [was] dry. The blood under her head was... coagulated.

"It had already clotted and started to harden...dried blood on the steps, and also on the wall.

"And it also looked like it had been wiped away or wiped on.

"It had been smeared, instead of just blood droplets soaking down the wall."

Ron Paige, a colleague of James' said that it appeared as though Kathleen had been deceased for some time due to her appearance.

This included that 'she had no life in her heart at all' and that 'her lips and skin were pale and blue'.

According to an official record from emergency services, Michael Peterson had called an ambulance at 2.41am, reportedly panicking.

He told dispatchers: “My wife’s had an accident...she fell down the stairs," as well as saying three times that 'she's still breathing'.

Paramedics were at the scene just seven minutes later, finding that Kathleen had passed away.

The drama series has been praised, with fans on IMDB calling it 'one of the best things I've personally ever watched', while another called it 'pure piece of art, and someone else said it was 'haunting and disturbing'.
