A new teaser trailer for Tim Burton’s forthcoming Addams Family series Wednesday shows Jenna Ortega in action as the titular goth, ahead of its release later this year. Watch the trailer here:

Billed as a ‘twisted new series from the mind of Tim Burton’, Wednesday follows the youngster as she attends Nevermore Academy, balancing her studies with all manner of mysterious goings on.

A synopsis from Netflix says: “The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.

“Wednesday's attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago - all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”

A new trailer shows You star Ortega, 19, donning Wednesday’s signature pigtails and solemn expression as she gets stuck into the 'mayhem, mystery and murder' of her new home - as we learn that she has worked her way through 'eight schools in five years'.

"Finally, you will be among peers you understand you," Catherine Zeta-Jones' Morticia Addams tells her daughter in the trailer.

When one of said peers asks Wednesday if she fancies a 'stab at being social', Wednesday replies flatly: "I do like stabbing."

Previously speaking to Entertainment Weekly about her character, Ortega said: "We've never seen her as a teenage girl.

"It's funny and sweet and almost charming to hear this 8-year-old's obsession with murder and blood and guts.

"As she gets older, that nasty attitude or [those] biting remarks, it's almost kind of hard to not make it sound like every other teenage girl... I've never had the opportunity to play an iconic character before.

"I know she's well-loved and well-respected and I just don't want to mess her up."

Alongside Ortega and Zeta-Jones, the Addams Family cast is completed by Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams – with Uncle Fester yet to be unveiled by creators.

Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in 1991’s The Addams Family and its 1993 sequel Addams Family Values, is also due to make an appearance as Marilyn Thornhill, while Gwendoline Christie stars as Principal Larissa Weems.
