Will Smith 'Plans Hollywood Return' In One Of His Most Iconic Roles

Will Smith 'Plans Hollywood Return' In One Of His Most Iconic Roles

The actor made headlines for all the wrong reasons at the Oscars but could bounce back with a new movie.

Will Smith has not had the best of times recently considering that whole incident at the Oscars where he slapped Chris Rock and shouted 'keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth!' at the comedian.

Although he won the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard, he resigned from the Academy and was banned from all of its events for the next 10 years in the aftermath of the slap.

Now, Smith is rumoured to be revisiting one of his most iconic roles by working on a sequel to 2007's popular post-apocalyptic movie I Am Legend.

According to The Sun, Smith's production company Westbrook Studios will be making the movie and Michael B Jordan will be joining the cast for the sequel.

Jordan's own production company, Outlier Society, will also play a part in bringing the sequel to the big screen.

Deadline reported in March that the sequel to I Am Legend was in the works and that details on the plot were being kept firmly under wraps to avoid any sort of spoilers leaking out ahead of time.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is attached to pen the script, which has not yet been finished but is reportedly due to feature Smith's character playing a part.

Goldsman adapted the original 1954 novel into a screenplay for the 2007 movie.

They also reported that the sequel was still at a very early point in production with no director yet attached to the film.

Smith later appeared to confirm the rumours that I Am Legend would be getting a sequel when he posted an image of a post-apocalyptic New York to Instagram with Michael B Jordan tagged.

Those familiar with the movie might be wondering how Smith can be making a comeback considering his character died at the end of the film.

Smith's character, US Army virologist Robert Neville, blows himself up at the end of I Am Legend in order to protect his companions and safeguard a cure which could save humanity.

It's a bit hard to see how he can come back from the climactic ending where he blows himself up with a grenade along with a horde of darkseekers, the infected people prowling around the post-apocalyptic world in the movie.

However, there might be a way through thanks to an alternative ending which is closer to the original book where Smith's character survives.

In that alternate ending, which was bundled with the movie's special edition DVD, Neville survives to the end of the film after he returns a darkseeker he had captured to her mate, who then leads the pack away.

No release date or timeline for the sequel to I Am Legend has been set down but events are in motion to bring a second film to cinemas.

Smith does have other projects in the pipeline, including another Bad Boys movie which is currently in development.
