Richard Ayoade Left Speechless After 'Crystal Maze' Contestant Loses Her Wig

"I hope you weren't filming this" - well, it is a TV show.

Anyone who has ever seen anything with Richard Ayoade in it knows that he is not often lost for words - but he was stunned into silence the other day on The Crystal Maze when one of the contestants' wig fell off.

He didn't even have one of his usual quick-witted comments to make about it - in fact, he stood there in total silence, unable to fathom what had happened.

The contestants were a group of students from London, and they actually turned out to be quite funny and interesting. They gave as good as they got to their host 'Richy Boy' Ayoade throughout their journey through the maze.

The most hilarious, if slightly bizarre, moment arrived when one of the team, Michelle, lost the wig that was on her head, much to everyone's surprise.

After she failed a task, the wig came off her head, and she was then immediately surrounded by her team, who shielded her until she could get her hairpiece back onto her head.

When he eventually found some words to describe the situation, in his own inimitable, awkward, style, Ayoade said: "Okay, a lot of emotion. Some emotions coming through. And also... I don't know what the etiquette is in this situation.

"I think we wait for the grooming to continue."

Once the wig was back on, the contestant said: "I hope you didn't film that bit!"

Unsurprisingly for a TV show, they had actually been filming every single second of the whole thing, Ayoade reminded her of this fact.

"We've been filming everything," he said. Standard practice when filming a game show, really.

It turned out to be a good job that they were filming everything, because the episode and the team have become very popular on social media - particularly on Twitter:

So, all's well that ends well. The hair came off, but it gave everyone a giggle and people seemed to warm to them as a team.

Just a word of advice though, perhaps a weave or a wig is not the most practical thing to wear on an activity-based game show.
