A New Polar Research Ship Could Be Named 'Boaty McBoatface'

Amazing.

If you ask a serious question on the internet, you can very much expect the majority of responses to be far from serious.

Which is why asking people of the internet to put forward suggestions for the name of a new polar research ship could be construed as a bad idea. The National Research Council (NERC) asked their Twitter followers to help name the ship which is currently under construction, and it threw up some great ideas.

Without many guidelines other than it must have the 'RRS (Royal Research Ship) format', the likes of 'RRS Ice Ice Baby', 'RRS Boatimus Prime' and 'RRS Boat Marley and the Wahelers', were put forward. However, leading the way, ahead of 'RRS David Attenborough' and 'RRS Henry Worsley' is the brilliant 'RRS Boaty McBoatface'.

I can't help but think that had the Titanic been named Boaty McBoatface the film would have been improved no end.

You can submit your own entry on the NERC website, or you can vote for Boaty McBoatface. You should probably do the latter - imagine hearing about groundbreaking research that was conducted on board a ship of that name.

The closing date for entries is 16th April. After that a panel of expert will review the suggestions before a final decision is made.
