US burger restaurant ‘better than McDonald’s’ set to open first store in UK this week

Americans have told Brits it's probably better than the options we have at the moment

Let’s be honest, we’re absolutely spoilt for choice at the moment when it comes to places to grab a burger.

From cheap fast food spots to pricier ones to restaurants serving them covered in gold or with gourmet ingredients, it’s not hard to find a decent one.

But no matter the range of choices, Maccies continues to take first place for many as the go-to spot. But a popular US restaurant described as being ‘better than McDonald’s’ could perhaps change things for foodies.

In comes the California-born chain that is set to open its first store in the UK this week, with hopes to establish a whopping 100 restaurants across the nation over the next four years.

Founded in 1941, the brand is known best for its ‘charbroiled’ burgers and currently boasts over 1,000 sites across the states. But despite operating in 28 countries across the world, it isn’t until this Thursday (3 April) that Brits will be able to get a taste without travelling abroad.

Well, unless you call driving from the likes England to Wales as going ‘abroad’.

The burger place we're talking about is Carl’s Jr. and it's set to have its opening in St. David’s Shopping Centre, Cardiff, on Thursday with an offer of 100 free burgers to its first customers.

David Moffat, Country Manager, BRG for Carl’s Jr. UK, said in a statement: “We are thrilled to bring Carl’s Jr. to Cardiff, marking our first location in the UK.

"The team at BRG has been working hard to bring the Carl’s Jr. experience to the UK, and we can’t wait to welcome our first guests soon.

“We’ve seen incredible excitement from fans eager to try our food, and we’re confident our range of juicy 100% Angus Beef Burgers, Hand-Breaded Chicken Burgers and Tenders, as well as irresistible Ice-Cream Shakes will quickly become customer favourites.”

It’s not quite yet confirmed what will be on the menu when Carl’s Jr. brings its popular burgers to the UK, but the brand has often prided itself for being a ‘hangover cure’.

Their hero item, the Famous Star, is available in the states as a single, double or triple and features the charbroiled all-beef patty, melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, slide onions, dill pickles, Special Sauce and mayonnaise on a seeded bun.

They also have a number of veggie options, breakfast burritos, chicken products and desserts like French Toast Dips.

Users on X have often said that Carl’s Jr. is ‘better than Burger King and McDonald’s’, while Americans on Reddit told Brits they think of it as ‘the best national chain’ and it offers the ‘best of the fast food/drive-through burgers’.

“Carls JR is easily better than McDonald’s Burger King and probably most of the other American fast food chains you have currently in the United Kingdom,” one wrote.

Well, bring on the Carls Jr. opening this week so we can make our own minds up.
