An etiquette expert has shown how we’ve been drinking tequila wrong this whole time.

British etiquette coach William Hanson took to TikTok to share with his 833.2k followers his tequila top tip and its left the internet beyond baffled.

Now, I'm sure many of have a whole arsenal of blurry memories from wild nights out brought about by the magic of knocking back the Mexican spirit with some lime and salt... if you're lucky!

However, it would seem that this is not the correct way to drink the party tipple at all.

British etiquette coach, William Hanson, explained how to correctly drink Tequila.

In the video, William explains: "You've been drinking tequila wrong.

"We don't shoot it back in a shot form. Instead, in Mexico, the correct check ahead is to sip tequila."

The expert continued: "And then if you need to in between, you can use lime or orange and salt and suck in order to cleanse the palate."

William went on to reveal he was a total newbie to the bev, concluding the video with a first-ever taste test demonstration: "And I'll be honest, I have never ever tried tequila. Until now.

"Wish me luck!"

It appeared he most definitely needed it given the eye-widening reaction he had straight after sipping the burning booze.

The video, which was captioned: "Sucking really can cleanse the palate," has since gone viral after clocking up more than 1.3 million views on the platform with hundreds upon hundreds of comments from people eager to share their reactions to it.

One TikTok user penned: "Maaaan apparently I've been doing everything wrong...I done give up at this point!"

A second explained: "That's probably the correct method. But if I order Tequila, I want to get buzzed fast. and the taste is not something I wanna savour."

"Sorry. Typically, I agree with you. But…my PhD in Tequila consumption disagrees," echoed a third.

A fourth claimed: "To be honest, that's not possible with most low budget Tequila."

"'Sipping' now that ain't fun at all," wrote another.

William had a pretty interesting reaction to sipping Tequila for the first time ever.

Many couldn't help but comment on William's reaction to the spirit with one TikTok user writing: "His face tells you why you shoot it."

A second chimed in: "I just watched the etiquette leave his eyes."

Others, however, declared there was no 'wrong way' to drink the alcohol with one person stating: "Mexican here! There's no wrong way to drink Tequila."

Another added: "Literally nobody sips it in Mexico. They chug it as if it was water."

And, as if they took the words right out my own mouth, a final TikTok user resolved: "A shot is technically ONE sip."

Well, you know what they say - one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
