For Gen Z, the hustle is real (and sort of weird)

From dog walking and knitting, to dressing up as a giant banana…? Discover the quirkier side hustles with Tesco Mobile.

Remember that infamous Kim K clip where she said that nobody wants to work these days? Well, it looks like people do want to work, especially to make some extra cash from their side hustles.

And Tesco Mobile have been doing some hustling themselves with their latest research on the UK’s side hustlers. And it turns out that some of these jobs are very inventive.

From brushing an old dog’s teeth once a week to getting crafty with crochet, nearly a third (29%) of small business owners describe their side hustle as ‘quirky’. There are those who can consult you on the perfect baby name and those who can draft a gentle break up text message for you.

When she needed some extra cash, Becky decided to sell items from her wardrobe. Five years later, she sells secondhand clothing that she’s sourced and repaired, and “has turned a side hustle into a full on business”.

But it’s not all about the money (although 7% are earning more than £10k a year). For many it’s passion over profit, with 47% saying their side hustle is a bit of fun and 78% saying it’s completely different from their 9 to 5.

Like Max and James, who run a live music collective. After seeing how much joy their live music events brought, they decided to make it a full thing, “from the first event, we saw how impactful it was, bringing people together, and we were like ‘oh maybe we should be in the events world’”.

Tesco Mobile have stepped in to support the nation’s side hustlers with their Tesco Mobile Business Plans, helping them stay connected and in control with their passions through benefits only accessible to businesses.

Whether that’s taking pics of your secondhand items to sell on (Marie Kondo would be proud) or growing an audience on social media as a content creator, then Tesco Mobile will help you do it.
