Asking one simple question could get you a hotel room upgrade absolutely free

Getting a better room on your next trip could be as easy as asking one simple question

A travel expert has explained why you don't need to pay extra or have some sort of an elite status to get a better room.

Apparently, it's as easy as asking one simple question, preferably in a polite manner.

If you want that extra bit of luxury, Jamie, who owns an exclusive-use private estate in Scotland called Wedderlie House, says you should ask the check-in desk to move you to a corner room.

He explained to Metro that 'corner rooms are often slightly larger than standard rooms because of the building layout'.

"They also usually only share one wall with another guest, meaning they can be noticeably quieter, which many travellers really appreciate after a long journey," Jamie said.

Although there are no guarantees of an upgrade, Jamie has provided four things you can try to improve your odds:

  • Speak to check-in staff politely
  • Get an early flight so you can check in before the rooms have been allocated
  • Don't travel during busy periods like the summer holidays
  • Mention to staff that you would prefer a quieter room

"If one is available when you check in, staff may be happy to allocate," Jamie said.

"If a hotel isn’t at full capacity, reception teams often have some flexibility with room assignments.

"Reception staff are used to guests asking for preferences such as higher floors, quieter rooms or particular views.

"Asking for a corner room is no different — if one is available they will often try to accommodate it."

Don't be shy

While the idea of sweet talking seasoned hotel staff might sound a little frightening, the truth is that there is no harm in asking.

"A quick question at reception can mean a more comfortable and quieter stay," Jamie adds.

"And it doesn’t cost anything to ask."

Even if you are refused an upgrade, Jamie reckons that most staff will try and accommodate you in another way, possibly with freebies, a hotel bar voucher, or some valuable advice about your stay.

Either way, the worst they can hopefully say is 'no'.

Another helpful tactic is mentioning special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or honeymoons.

The idea is that most hotels like to help guests celebrate, and an upgrade is an easy way for them to create a memorable stay.

Moral of the story - If you don't ask, you don't get.
