Get to know Victoria like never before with these five underrated road trips

Victoria has something for everyone (as long as your battery is healthy and you can start the trip).

You’ve heard about the Great Ocean Road and the Dandenong Ranges — you might have even checked them out for yourself, but if you're looking for a real adventure, it's time to go a little further afield and see more of what Victoria has to offer. Victoria is absolutely full of hidden gems just waiting for you to find them, and the best way to do that is by hitting the roads less travelled. That’s where the real magic happens, with stunning natural beauty, cool artistic towns, and a food scene that’s seriously good. This state has it all, from epic mountains to quiet, sunny coastlines, making every drive a one-of-a-kind experience.

But hey, before you take off, you'll want to make sure your car is ready for the journey. A dead battery is a massive buzzkill, especially in the middle of nowhere. A quick, free battery health check at Battery World can save you from a huge headache. And while you're there, check out their dual battery systems, portable power packs and maybe even spare 4x4 or camping batteries, so you can handle whatever your road trip throws at you — even if it's camping under the Victorian stars.

The Silo Art Trail

For a journey that is equal parts art gallery and outback adventure, the Silo Art Trail is a must-do. Stretching over 200 kilometres through the Wimmera Mallee region in western Victoria, this trail is considered Australia’s largest outdoor gallery. It connects six small country towns with massive murals painted on grain silos by world-renowned street artists. The first of these, painted by Guido van Helten in Brim, transformed the area and sparked the entire movement. As you drive from town to town, you'll be awed by the sheer scale and detail of these artworks, which often pay tribute to the local communities and their history. It's a truly unique way to see the Australian countryside and meet the friendly locals who call it home. The trail is fully sealed and easy to follow, making it a perfect weekend or long weekend getaway.

The Pyrenees Wine and Goldfields Route

Tucked away between the famous Goldfields and the Grampians, the Pyrenees Ranges are a delightful surprise. This trip is for those who appreciate good food, great wine, and stunning scenery without the crowds. The region is known for its cool-climate Shiraz and a host of award-winning cellar doors where you can enjoy tastings.

Beyond the wineries, you'll find charming heritage towns like Avoca and Beaufort, each with a unique character and history. Explore heritage buildings, browse antique shops, and take a stroll around the beautiful Lake Beaufort. For a taste of nature, Mount Buangor National Park offers excellent hiking trails with panoramic views of the volcanic ranges. This route offers a quiet, relaxed pace and a chance to truly unwind.

South Gippsland and Wilsons Prom

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, South Gippsland is a region of stunning coastal beauty and lush, rolling hills. This road trip takes you from Melbourne's eastern suburbs to the majestic wilderness of Wilsons Promontory National Park. On the way, you can stop in quaint seaside villages like Meeniyan and Fish Creek, which are known for their lively arts scenes and quirky cafes.

The drive itself is a treat for the eyes, passing through beautiful farmland before reaching the rugged coastline. The highlight is, of course, "The Prom," as it's known to locals. Here you'll find pristine white-sand beaches like Squeaky Beach (named for the sound the sand makes underfoot), granite mountains, and an abundance of wildlife including kangaroos and wombats. The area offers a true escape into nature, perfect for hiking, swimming, and simply soaking up the spectacular scenery.

The Great Alpine Road

While it’s a well-known route, the full length of the Great Alpine Road is an experience many travellers miss. This epic drive winds through Victoria’s High Country, offering jaw-dropping views and a change of pace from the coastal routes. Starting in Wangaratta, the road climbs through picturesque valleys and charming towns like Bright, a hub for outdoor adventure.

From there, you'll traverse the alpine region, passing through ski resorts like Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain, even in the off-season, which offer a unique kind of high-altitude tranquility. The drive is a testament to Victoria’s diverse geography, with dramatic mountain scenery giving way to the serene Tambo River. The journey ends in the Gippsland town of Bairnsdale, completing a spectacular cross-state adventure that showcases the heart of Victoria’s wild and beautiful alpine landscape.

Macedon Ranges and Daylesford

For a calming, nature-filled getaway, look no further than the Macedon Ranges and Daylesford region. Just an hour from Melbourne, this area is famous for its natural mineral springs and stunning gardens, offering your body and soul a well-earned rest. The drive itself is beautiful, with winding roads leading through thick forests and past historic mansions.

Must-sees include the iconic Hanging Rock, with its mysterious rock formations and panoramic views. Daylesford, the heart of the spa country, is perfect for a weekend of indulgence, with its luxurious spas, galleries, and cafes. You can also explore the surrounding area, with tranquil walks around Lake Daylesford and visits to places like the beautiful Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. It's an ideal trip for anyone looking to slow down, relax, and appreciate the peaceful side of Victoria.
