The father of Omar Mateen, the man who killed 50 people during the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, has apologised for his son's actions.

Mir Seddique, the 29-year-old's dad, has also revealed the reason behind his son committing the worst mass shooting in US history.

Speaking to NBC News, Seddique said that the shooting was nothing to do with religion, but because Mateen saw two gay men kissing in Miami a few months ago, and so he targeted the gay club.

He told NBC: "We were in Downtown Miami, Bayside, people were playing music. And he saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry.

"They were kissing each other and touching each other and he said: 'Look at that. In front of my son they are doing that.' And then we were in the men's bathroom and men were kissing each other.

"We are saying we are apologising for the whole incident. We weren't aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.

"This had nothing to do with religion."

Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic events of last night.
