Chelsea Clinton Defends Barron Trump Against Trolls

She didn't miss a chance for a dig at his dad, though.

Being the kid of the president of the US is probably not as much fun as it seems.

On one hand you do get to live in the White House, which as we saw this weekend has its own bowling alley, but on the other hand you have fully grown men going in on you when you're only 10. So, swings and roundabouts really.

Donald Trump's son Barron has already had more than his fair share of abuse, including a tweet from Katie Rich, a writer for Saturday Night Live, who tweeted: "Barron will be this country's first home-school shooter," before deleting the post three hours later.

Now, while his dad, mum and older siblings are fair-game for a bit of social media name-calling, it does seem a bit harsh to go in on a kid; even if that kid is the son of one of the most polarising public figures America has ever known.

Someone who knows what that sort of pressure is like is Bill and Hillary Clinton's daughter Chelsea. In a Facebook post, Chelsea stuck up for Barron, saying: "Barron Trump deserves the chance every child - to be a kid."

But, being a Clinton, she naturally couldn't miss an opportunity to take a dig Trump, adding: "Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids." Some people were quick to call her out, saying that the message was 'hypocritical' to defend Barron while simultaneously using the post to slag off Trump.

One guy tweeted Chelsea saying: "Witch! You pretend to care for Barron and in the same tweet use him as a prop to attack DT?"

While another said: "Should have let the comment about Barron stand on its own & tweeted separately about his father. No props due to you."

Other commended Chelsea for her move, calling her 'classy' and agreeing with her that Barron should be entitled to his privacy.

America's First Child

Fortunately for Chelsea, 36, Twitter hadn't been invented when she was thrust into the public eye, aged 12, when her dad Bill was voted in 1993.

Bill Clinton held office from 1993 to 2001 and during that time Chelsea, the First Child, was held up to much scrutiny from the press and members of the public.

Like Barron, Chelsea also had to deal with shit off entertainers and comedians who think having a go at kids is funny. Rush Limbaugh famously said: "Socks in the White House cat, but did you know there is also a White House dog'?" before showing a photograph of 13-year-old Chelsea. Nice guy, eh? He would go on to apologise for his 'joke'.

Proving that Saturday Night Live has never really known where the line is, the programme also had a sketch in which said that "adolescence had thus far been unkind" to 12-year-old Chelsea, before adding that perhaps "she could turn into a babe in waiting." Again, an apology was issued and the 'joke' was removed from repeats.

It's not all bad news for Barron, though. In an interview with ET, Chelsea spoke about how growing up in one of America's most famous families gave her a thicker skin: "I think in some ways this is the gift of having grown up in politics. I never mistake the political for the personal."
