A Brazilian man has been freed after police found him tied to a bed in his parents' basement.

Armando de Andrade went missing when he was 16. That was 20 years ago.

Police stumbled across the poor guy when they were searching homes in the area for members of a drugs gang.

The MailOnline reports that he was sat in a windowless room which had faeces all over the floor. He also had 'enormous fingernails and toenails', a long beard which had grown to his knees, and he looked 'malnourished'.

Police chief Celso Marchiori said: "He got up, very impaired and didn't speak a word. We took him outside and he still didn't say anything. We didn't know if he was scared or drugged.

"He wasn't able to identify us as police officers. We called for help and he was taken straight to hospital.

"It's difficult to believe he was in that place for 20 years. It's a very insanitary place, he wouldn't have survived. There's no light at all."

This is where it starts to get a bit weird. The police chief believes that he wouldn't have survived down there for that long, so where has he been?

His father, Amancio de Andrade, said that Armando left home at 18 and recently came back. Apparently, he asked to be locked in a room so that he could get over a drug addiction.

Amancio explained: "He's a grown man. He never got in touch. Then last week I opened my door and he was there. He gave him food and let him stay in the basement room. He asked me to lock the door so he couldn't get out."

However, this story doesn't wash with one neighbour, Aparecido Rocha Brasil.

He told Globo News: "Every teenager is curious about these things. But for some reason, when alcohol entered into his life, his family decided to take this approach, and kept him locked up for all this time."
