A jar of Vegemite is on display at Sweden’s Disgusting Food Museum

That's a bloody outrage, that is.

Aussies have discovered that Vegemite has its own display at the Museum of Disgusting Food in the Swedish city of Malmö.

And hoo boy, they are not impressed.

While Sweden might be the land of beautiful people, flat-packed furniture, and tasty meatballs, we've officially lost faith in our now-former Northern Hemisphere pals.

In the words of one-time character on The Simpsons, Gus: "That's a bloody outrage, that is."

The awful news was shared on Reddit, and folks Down Under are now off sharpening pitchforks and preparing their kangaroos to ride into battle.

One Reddit user said: "This from a country where Surströmming (basically, rotting fermented herring) is classed as a delicacy. I'll stick with me Vegemite, thanks. And you can take ABBA back while you're at it."

A second riffed on The Simpsons as well: "It’s a bootable offence."

A third said: "Have [you] made an official complaint through diplomatic channels yet? This insult to Australian culture [and] should not stand."

Another added: "So [are] we sending the emus [over] to Sweden then? How dare they."

That Redditor was, of course, referring to The Great Emu War of 1932. It's peak Aussie history.

Basically the Australian Army launched an offensive against a herd of out-of-control emus. The emus, however, decided to fight back... and the Australian Army lost. Seriously.

Museum curator Samuel West told the ABC that the Aussie favourite earned itself a place due it being a 'traumatic food experience' for those who mistook it for Nutella.

"I love Vegemite so I’m kind of sad that it’s in the museum," he said.

West added that the menagerie of weird foods is not a culinary 'freak show' rather a study in the way disgust radically changes from country to country.

"The evolutionary function of disgust is to help us avoid disease and unsafe food," he told the ABC.

"Disgust is one of the six fundamental human emotions.

"While the emotion is universal, the foods that we find disgusting are not.

"What is delicious to one person can be revolting to another."
