Fuming shoppers vow to boycott Tesco over meal deal price rise

Tesco has increased the price of its lunchtime meal deals for the second time in three years after keeping the price the same for a decade

In a world where it feels like everything is constantly getting more expensive, Tesco has increased the price of its lunchtime meal deals, and let's just say people are not happy.

A meal deal, which consists of a main, a snack and a drink, has gone up from £3.60 to £3.85 for Clubcard holders, while customers without a loyalty card will pay £4.25 instead of £4.

While the price increase is just 25p per meal, it is the second price increase for the supermarket favourite, with the previous price hike taking place in 2022. Before that, Tesco's meal deals cost £3 for a whole decade.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "Our meal deal remains great value and the ideal way to grab lunch on the go, at just £3.85 for a main, snack, and drink when bought with a Clubcard.

"With more than 20 million possible combinations, the Tesco meal deal has got something for every taste, from a classic Chicken Club Sandwich to Tesco Korean Style Chicken Dragon Rolls."

Angry shoppers are now vowing to boycott the UK supermarket, with some even going as far as branding it the 'final f***ing straw.'

Taking to the r/Tesco thread on Reddit, one shopper wrote: "We all died in 2020 and this is hell. It's not a deal anymore, just a meal."

"Price gouging, greedflation, I hope they get boycotted," another fumed.

A third wrote: "I was priced out of meal deals with the last price increase so any further increase is just like the size of celebration boxes… irrelevant."

Luckily for Tesco, not everyone is quite so disgruntled, with some shoppers claiming it's still pretty good value for money.

"Am I the only one who thinks it's still pretty reasonable?" one questioned. "Meal deals have always been cheap and we're lucky to even have them. They're barely a concept in any other country.

"It's pretty good value for a sandwich/pasta/salad, snack and a drink. Especially when you look at their price individually etc. I also just enjoy the convenience, I'm too lazy to prep."

Meanwhile, another agreed: "Let's be honest, it's still good value for what you get," however, they did add that if the price continues to go up, they may have to start making their own lunch.

Sadly Tesco's meal deal price hike is a sign of the times, and comes just months after Sainbury's announced it would be increasing the price of its lunchtime multi-buy from £3.75 to £3.95.
