Amber Heard Says She's Terrified Johnny Depp Will Sue Her Again

Amber Heard has admitted she's scared Johnny Depp will sue her for a second time after she was found to have defamed him in a 2018 op-ed.

Depp was awarded more than $10 million in damages following the trial in Fairfax, Virginia, but Heard expressed fears the verdict may not have been the end of the issues if she continues to make allegations about her ex-husband.

In an interview with NBC's Dateline, Heard said she 'took for granted' what she assumed was her 'right to speak'.

Speaking to host Savannah Guthrie, the Aquaman star continued: "I'm scared that no matter what I do or what I say or how I say it — every step that I take will present another opportunity for this sort of silencing, which is what, I guess, a defamation lawsuit is meant to do — to take your voice."

Heard's comments echoed the statement she released in the wake of the verdict earlier this month, when she said she was sad to have 'lost a right... to speak openly and freely'. Heard also claimed the verdict set back the clock 'to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated'.

"It sets back the idea that violence against women needs to be taken seriously," she added at the time.

In spite of the fear that Depp may take further legal action, Heard told Guthrie she stands by 'every word' of her testimony and will continue to do so until her 'dying day'. However, she said she doesn't 'blame' the jury for their verdict, describing herself as 'not a good victim' and 'not a likeable victim'.

"I'm not a saint. I'm not asking anyone to like me," she said, though she also reiterated claims that the verdict may have a 'chilling' effect for survivors of domestic violence.

"What I learned in that trial is it's never going to be good enough. If you have proof, then it was a scheme, it was a hoax. If you don't have proof, it didn't happen," Heard said.

Following Heard's interview, a spokesperson for Depp told Insider Heard was trying to 'reimagine' what happened in the trial.

"It's unfortunate that while Johnny is looking to move forward with his life, the defendant and her team are back to repeating, reimagining and re-litigating matters that have already been decided by the Court and a verdict that was unanimously and unequivocally decided by a jury in Johnny's favour," they said.

Heard has expressed plans to appeal the jury's verdict.
