Incredible Footage Shows Humpback Whale Bursting Through The Sea Next To Fishing Boat
This incredible video shows the moment a humpback whale bursts through the calm sea, much to the surprise of a passing fisherman.
Put your hand up if you'd have shit yourself, had you been in this fella's shoes... most of us, right?
Taken by photographer Douglas Croft, 60, and whale watcher Kate Cummings, the footage shows the whale shooting up through the waves close to a boat carrying an unsuspecting fisherman before it crashes back down.
The amazing sequence was captured in Monterey Bay in Canada.
Douglas said: "It was quite exciting! Salmon season coincides with the time when humpbacks are returning to Monterey Bay to feed for the summer and there were hundreds of boats on the bay fishing.
"This whale had breached a couple of times before this and many times they'll just keep doing it.
"I went below deck to shoot from a porthole close to the water line. That's what gives this amazing perspective of looking up at the whale.
"That the breach was directly behind the fishing boat makes really shows the size. Since the boat is closer, it should look bigger, but the whale is huge! If I'd been the fisherman, I'd probably need some new underwear."
Nice to know Douglas is on the same wavelength as us. Yep, 'wave' length. Because it's in the water. Nope, I'm not even sorry.
Kate, who took the video said: "It was fun capturing this video. The whale had already breached multiple times much further away from the fisherman.
"But sometimes when whales breach multiple times, they're also heading a specific direction when they're underwater building momentum for the next breach.
"I figured the next breach would be around the fisherman because the whale was heading that way and sure enough...! Though I didn't expect the whale and the boat to line up so perfectly."
Everyone likes to see whales leaping above the surface of the water, but sometimes they're pretty helpful with it. Last week we became pretty obsessed with the beluga whale that returned a woman's phone to her after she accidentally dropped it in the sea.
Ina Mansika was down at the harbour to try and get a glimpse of the famous white whale - bizarrely rumoured to be a Russian spy fitted with a harness, and suspected to be trained by the navy.
Despite the disaster, the whale swam down and grabbed the device to bring it back to the surface for her.
Ina explained to The Dodo: "We laid down on the dock to look at it [the whale] and hopefully get the chance to pat it.
"I had forgotten to close my jacket pocket and my phone fell in the ocean. We assumed it would be gone forever, until the whale dove back down and came back a few moments later with my phone in its mouth!"
Of course, the phone was knackered, rendered completely useless by the water but it's the thought that counts, isn't it?
What a bunch of friendly and fabulous LADs.
