This Octopus' Escape From An Aquarium Is A Better Story Than 'Free Willy'

This Octopus' Escape From An Aquarium Is A Better Story Than 'Free Willy'

Beautiful.

After years of reporting awful stories about whales being held in captivity in SeaWorld, it brings us great pleasure to report the tale of the octopus that escaped an aquarium in New Zealand in a successful bid for freedom.

Inky the Octopus managed to escape the National Aquarium of New Zealand in the coastal city of Napier.

Staff believe that Inky managed to squeeze through a tiny gap at the top of his tank in the dead of night before sliding across the floor into the sea via a 50m drainpipe.

National Aquarium manager Rob Yarrell told website Stuff: "He managed to make his way to one of the drain holes that go back to the ocean and off he went - didn't even leave us a message.

"Even quite a large octopus, they can squeeze down to the size of their mouth which is the only really hard part of their body.

"They are always exploring and they are great escape artists."

Yarrell said that all of the aquarium's remaining octopuses will be closely monitored so that they don't try and do the same.

Something tells us Inky is probably a lot happier in the ocean than being kept in a tank.
