Channel 5 to air The Emoji Movie during the Queen’s funeral

While most of the country is watching the state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II, Channel 5 will be airing The Emoji Movie

While many will be tuning into the late Queen's state funeral on Monday (19 September), Channel 5 has taken a slightly different direction with its offerings for the day.

The channel will be the only mainstream public service broadcaster in the UK on Monday (19 September) that will not be airing the funeral or documentaries about the Queen.

Instead, it will be showing The Emoji Movie at the same time the funeral is aired on the likes of BBC, ITV and Sky.

The Emoji Movie features the likes of James Corden and Patrick Stewart and has been a commercial success according to its makers.

However, the film is certainly not critically-acclaimed - it has a shockingly low six percent on Rotten Tomatoes and its IMDb score is not much better.

While other channels will be covering the funeral all day, the kids movie will be followed by Stuart Little and Ice Age 3 on Channel 5.

The opinion from people on social media has been fairly mixed, with some saying it is good for young children to have the option to watch something else if the funeral is too upsetting. Meanwhile, others believe the state funeral of a monarch should be aired everywhere.

One person said: "To be fair it's good to see them doing something like this. Most families will have 2 TVs so adults can watch it and children watch the film. It's a shame BBC aren't doing something similar with BBC3."

The Emoji Movie is not liked by critics.

A second added: "I thought the emoji movie on 5 on Monday was a joke !?!?"

A third said: "It’s sad that we’ve lost the queen, but do we really need live coverage and opinions 24/7 for weeks on end?"

Other TV channels have released their scheduling for Monday, and as expected, it is dominated by the Queen's funeral.

BBC One will be showing the funeral from 8:00am to 5:00pm, while BBC Two will broadcast the same programme with a British Sign Language interpreter.

All of ITV's channels will broadcast the state funeral, as well as Sky, where the funeral will be broadcasted on its sports channels such as Sky Sports F1, Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports News.

Other Sky channels that will broadcast the funeral include Sky Comedy and Sky Crime - yes, you are reading that correctly.

Channel 4 will be showing Her Majesty The Queen - an obituary for the Queen at 10:55am, followed by a two-minute silence at 11:55am.

After that, a documentary will air on the Queen's coronation in 1953.

Still, if none of that is interesting you much, rest assured you can always tune into The Emoji Movie instead.
