One driver in Derby crashed their new Ferrari today (1 April) after driving it less than two miles.

Taking to Twitter to report the incident the Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit detailed how the driver crashed the car not long after purchasing it.

No one was said to be harmed in the crash, but pictures of the car show the vehicles damaged hood.

The policing unit said of the crash "Derby. 1st April. Driver bought a Ferrari this morning and crashed it after driving it less than 2 miles. No injuries. #DriveToArrive."

They also clarified: "Not an April Fool. Incident 368 of 01/04/22 refers. Thanks."

People quickly reacted to the news on Twitter, with one user saying: "The number of these hired out as pre wedding celebrations in Sandwell nr Birmingham is scary. Racing around the streets showing off. I imagine they're difficult to control due to the power. A bright yellow one shot past me this week."

While another suggested that there should be more rigorous testing for sports-car drivers: "Correct me if I’m wrong but don’t we need separate tests for different power motorbikes & need to have the licence for the previous cat for a period of time b4 moving on to the next? If so why don’t we do the same for cars? Stops those who pass in a Mini, drive away in a Ferrari."

With other users sharing the same sentiment: "I really can't understand how these people think that a normal driving license qualifies them to drive supercars without training. Expensive mistake and plenty of 'you can't park that there mate' hopefully aimed at him."

Others offered practical solutions to the issue, saying: "Said for a long time that garages that sell supercars should include a couple of hours tuition with a driver that knows what they are doing. Another couple of hundred on the price could save them a fortune."

While another use noted their own similar experience "I crashed my brand new truck within three months of purchase. It was a stupid move and totally my fault, but I didn’t fully appreciate the power it had. Fortunately, insurance covered it."

Currently in the UK you do not need a separate driving licence or test to drive a sports car, and according to gov.uk: "You can drive a van up to 3,500kg if you have a standard car driving licence."
