A man set himself the bizarre challenge of lifting weights and drinking beer every day for 90 days – this is what happened.

By now, we're all well aware of the downsides which consuming alcohol has on our bodies.

Hangovers, reduced libido and numerous issues affecting your liver, digestive system and cardiovascular health.

But what if you were to balance out your drinking habits by exercising every day –would that make drinking less damaging to the body?

It was this premise which one YouTube creator set out to investigate.

In a video titled 'I Drank Alcohol for 90 DAYS STRAIGHT - How Bad Was It?' Kyle Brown revealed his was putting the claim that there is 'no safe amount of alcohol' to the test.

Admittedly, Kyle is a little biased on the subject - as he is the owner of Clawhammer Supply, a home brewing equipment company - but nevertheless, he was more than happy to utilise his love for beer to conduct this science experiment.

Here is what he found.

The first change with Kyle noted was an improvement in his physical fitness, with the content creator and business owner noting that he'd 'never been stronger' than after completing his drink beer/lift weights experiment.

"I gained muscle mass, I lowered my overall percentage of body fat," he said. "I felt great, and it was easier than I expected."

However, he was quick to caveat that he wasn't crediting 90 days' worth of beers for his personal bests in the gym, noting that he had never lifted 'this consistently' – which means a pint isn't going to help you on the way to your fitness goals.

"I think the science is probably right on this one," he added.

So what was the overall purpose of the experiment? For Kyle, it was to work out the best way to enjoy your favourite beer while also staying healthy.

"I think you do that by offsetting the negative effects of alcohol with [the] positive effects of other activities," he explained.

As well as making sure to be active and exercise, Kyle suggested several lifestyle tweaks to combat the negative side effects of drinking, such as dehydration, liver damage, sleep disruption and testosterone lowering.

Here are some of the tips which he recommended:

  • Limit yourself to one or two beers a day, although the occasional night out is unavoidable
  • Drink earlier in the day
  • Substitute other unhealthy foods for your beer
  • Practice 'zebra striping', which is matching your alcohol consumption with water
  • Add supplements such as creatine and protein shakes to your diet

Overall, the point of Kyle's experiment was to highlight that alcohol can be enjoyed as part of an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

"If you drink alcohol and you want to stay healthy, you also need to work out, eat healthy food, stay hydrated, get good sleep and limit your overall alcohol intake," he added.
