Protests and riots have continued across France as the house of a French mayor was raided and set alight.

Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun was at City Hall at 1:30 am on Saturday night, when riots attacked his house where his wife and children were all sleeping.

“My home was attacked and my family was the victim of an assassination attempt,” said the mayor of L'Hay-les-Roses in a tweet on Sunday.

“It was an assassination attempt of unspeakable cowardice.”

His family were met with fireworks as they tried to escape while their house was set alight.

In trying to escape the attacks through the back garden, Jeanbrun’s wife and children were injured.

His wife has had to undergo surgery on a broken leg from the attack and now faces three months of rehabilitation.

According to ABC, the French spoke to reporters on Sunday where he said: "There is no doubt in the fact that they wanted to burn the house and in fact.

“From the moment they learned that there was someone inside the house because the lights were on,” he said, “they unleashed a salvo of mortar fire that was completely crazy."

Prime Minister of France, Élisabeth Borne, met with Jeanbrun in the aftermath referring to the attacks on his family as 'unacceptable.'

“To this elected representative of the Republic and to all the elected victims of violence, I repeat my solidarity and that of the Nation,” said Prime Minister Borne on Twitter.

“The culprits of these heinous acts will be prosecuted with the greatest firmness.”

According to local authorities, the incident has been classified as an attempted murder.

“Every effort will be made to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” said Prosecutor Stéphane Hardouin to CNN on Sunday.

The investigation found that at around 1:30 am, a flaming car crashed into Jeanbrun’s front yard which damaged the front gate and the family car.

Hardouin also confirmed that a fire accelerant was found at the scene of the crime.

No arrests have been made yet in relation to the attack.

The events come as more than 45,000 French police are dispersed across the country to control rioters who are protesting the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Nahel by police.
