Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Video Game Is Released For Smartphone

Potterheads around the world are gearing up to get their hands on the new wizard-themed AR game: Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

Brought to us by the creators of Pokemon Go - which made it acceptable for groups of adults to roam around parks late at night - the magical spin-off will allow players to use the real world to search for signs of magic and encounter some of the books' most iconic characters.

And it's out on Android and iOS devices on Friday, 21 June.

The exciting news was announced on the game's official Twitter account, along with a feature-length trailer to show players just how cool they can look chasing Dementors through the streets.

According to a synopsis of the game: "For the first time, you'll soon embark on your own Wizarding World adventure together with friends in the real world.

"Harry Potter: Wizards Unite combines content and characters you know and love from both the original Harry Potter series and the Fantastic Beasts films in a unique Wizarding World experience."

It goes on: "A calamity has befallen the wizarding world, causing artefacts, creatures, people, and even memories to mysteriously appear in the Muggle world. Witches and wizards from across the globe must come together to solve the mystery of The Calamity, overcome the confounding chaotic magic that surrounds these 'Foundables', and return them to their rightful place, keeping them safe from Muggle eyes.

"Your journey begins as a new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, established by the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards for the purpose of investigating and containing The Calamity."

But if you're more of a traditional Potter fan, then fear not. Last month it was revealed that J.K. Rowling has has four more books up her sleeve, set to be released at the end of June.

Pottermore - or should I say 'The digital heart of the Wizarding World' - is the author's online world of everything Harry Potter, and it gives us a little more detail on what we can expect from the new books.

The four short stories are all based on Hogwarts lessons and are accompanied by illustrations from London-based artist Rohan Daniel Eason.

The website states: "Prepare to delve deeper into the rich history of magic (be it our own Muggle history, or the magical world created by J.K. Rowling) with this new series of eBook shorts, inspired by the British Library exhibition and its companion books, Harry Potter: A History of Magic."
