I know it can feel like the world is falling apart right now - rents are spiralling out of control, energy bills are at an all-time high and the whole world seems to be on fire - but it's not all bad.

Yep, we come bearing baked goods and exciting news: Greggs is opening a 24-hour drive-thru.

Guys, this is not a drill. It is really happening.

The high street chain opened its first drive-thru back in 2017, and has since set up over a dozen across the country, with the majority open between 6am and 9pm.

But after enjoying a big year financially, they're looking to take things a step further, with another 150 stores on the horizon and longer opening hours being trialled.

We'll be seeing a lot more of these around the country very soon.
Greggs

Roisin Currie is the chief executive of Greggs. Announcing the move, she said: “Customers are seeking out great quality and great value, and that’s exactly what we offer.

“If you are a person who is out and about – whether you are going to work, or going to college or going to meet friends and you need to eat, then you are coming into Greggs and having a breakfast for £2.60, a lunch for £3.60, or an evening meal offer.

“It is just that easy way to fuel yourself when you’re on the go and you need to eat.”

But if you think the new plans will see you having to dig a little deeper for your sausage roll, fear not, at least for the time being.

Ms Currie said there are no plans to increase prices further, though she admitted that prices were always under review.

At the moment, there are around 2,330 Greggs in the country, but the chain said it believes there is a 'clear opportunity' for hundreds more yet.

And Ms Currie said there are big plans in the pipeline.

"2022 has been a year of strong progress for Greggs, the result of committed efforts to deliver our strategic growth plan," she explained.

Is there anything better than a Greggs?
Chris Bull/Alamy

"The significant opportunities on which the plan is based will remain centre stage in the year ahead as we make Greggs more accessible to even more customers.

"Although consumer incomes remain under pressure, Greggs continues to offer exceptional value to people looking for great tasting, high-quality food and drink on-the-go.

"We have an exciting, ambitious plan for the years ahead and, by continuing to nurture what makes Greggs special, I believe we are extremely well-placed to realise the opportunity to become a significantly larger, multi-channel business."

  • Saltbox Road, Bognor Regis
  • Westgate Retail Park, Slough
  • Allerdyce Court, Glasgow
  • Saffron Way, Sittingbourne
