Man freaks out after trying potent ‘God molecule’ drug that completely reorganizes brain activity
Drug researcher and journalist Hamilton Morris has spent years investigating psychoactive substances around the world.
Among the most powerful compounds he has explored is 5-MeO-DMT, often referred to as the ‘God molecule’ drug because of its ability to induce profound states of consciousness and complete ego dissolution.
Unlike the better-known DMT, 5-MeO-DMT typically produces few visual hallucinations, according to UCL.
Instead, users frequently report an overwhelming loss of identity, an altered perception of reality, and experiences that resemble near-death states.

Morris previously opened up about the intensity of the substance, describing his own encounter as deeply unsettling.
"That's probably the most terrifying experience I've ever had on psychedelics because I ceased to exist," he admitted in a 2024 interview with Joe Rogan.
"It's the one drug where I feel like when I took it I wasn't there anymore. I was gone until I came back.
"I didn't have thoughts... I knew I was experiencing the 5-MeO-DMT realm or whatever it was, but... I didn't realize I'm on my couch sitting at home. Like I was gone.
"There's no visuals. It was just this white sort of pixelated, grayish-white gone world. It was terrifying because it felt like death."
He added: "Coming back from it, I think it was very valuable.
"I remember thinking... 'God, I gotta clean up the way I talk... I'm full of s**t.' I did it a few times, I think I did it three times - but it was terrifying every time."
"While you're gone... I remember just thinking, 'Whoa, this is not good. This is not good.'
"You feel like, 'Oh my God, I f**ked up. I really died. I really stopped being here.'
"It also makes you think maybe this is going to the light... maybe this is what they talk about when they talk about going to the light when you die."
In another interview, Morris explained that the effects went far beyond conventional psychedelic experiences.
"For many people, myself included, the experience is losing consciousness entirely for a brief period, and then having something that could be termed a near-death experience," he said. Recalling one particularly powerful session, he described ‘a period where I completely, without logic or reason, suddenly had a sense of God’, emphasizing that it was an overwhelming feeling rather than a rational belief.
Morris has also cautioned against assuming 5-MeO-DMT is simply a stronger version of DMT.
"One of the unfortunate things about 5-MeO-DMT is its name," he noted, explaining that many people mistakenly believe it is merely a variation of DMT when, pharmacologically, it produces a distinctly different experience.
