A doctor has revealed a negative effect which comes from having a pint or two, which many may not be aware of.

Experts have outlined the risks of excessive drinking in the past, with the habit becoming more prominent as the sun starts to peak out from behind the clouds more and more each week.

For some reason, likely to do with the rise in feel-good hormones, the word 'pub' is muttered exponentially more by Brits when spring and summer rolls around.

But this is when the issue around having a bit too much can become a topic of conversation, because while we all know how bad drinking can get if you go over the recommended 14 units per week, what actually happens to our bodies?

A doctor known for his informative social media videos has explained the one detail many drinkers might miss.

Dr. Brian Hoeflinger is a board-certified neurosurgeon with over 171,000 subscribers on YouTube - he's known for his health-focused videos which explain how you can 'live a healthier, longer, more purposeful life'.

Speaking in a YouTube Short with over 10 million views, the US-based health professional explained, while taking 'shots': "So you take these shots and as you're taking them, that alcohol is building up in your system fast.

"Alcohol goes to your brain within five minutes and starts to affect you but maybe what you don't know is your liver only metabolises one ounce of alcohol per hour.

He went on: "So I just had five ounces of alcohol in my system, I would never (normally) drink it that fast," when speaking of how he was drinking the shots of water.

Dr. Hoelflinger added: "For demonstration purposes, I've got five ounces of liquor in my system right now and at the end of hour I'm only going to burn off an ounce,

"So I'm going to have five ounces of alcohol left in my bloodstream - my liver can't metabolise it that fast," he admitted, highlighting that binge drinking can take its toll on your body.

When it comes to signs of alcoholism though, the NHS have outlined six tell-tale signs that might reveal that someone has a drinking problem.

Six signs of alcoholism

1) Drink alcohol every day without thinking about it

2) Binge-drink regularly

3) Only socialise where drink is involved

4) Drink regularly during the day

5) Find it annoying when others are not drinking

6) Drink more than the NHS guidelines every month.

It follows a similar explanation to that provided by former alcoholics, who admitted that these signs can mean that you've got a drinking problem.
