Sam Thompson will be 'unable to speak' after vocal chord surgery

Sam Thompson has confirmed that he will be 'unable to speak' following an upcoming surgery.

The internet personality, who is best known for his appearances on Made in Chelsea, shared a health update on his popular podcast with Pete Wicks, Staying Relevant.

While on the show, Wicks revealed that he had a medical appointment scheduled for later in the month following a fall he'd had in December last year.

He'd also previously disclosed his ongoing issues with his eyesight, telling Thompson in May last year that he 'might need to go back to wearing an eye patch' as he looked into treatment for his lazy eye, which he'd had since childhood (via The Sun).

In the most recent episode, Sam joked: "That’s two men who are going for surgery this year."

Wicks then joked that Sam was preparing for a music career, as he said: "Yes, because Sam… I don't know if we are allowed to talk about it, it was one of the announcements we were going to wait for later, Sam is looking to go into music.

"So he is having some surgery on his vocal cords."

However, Sam quickly made it clear that a career in the music industry is unlikely any time soon, and explained the exact reason why after Pete questioned him further, with the former I'm A Celebrity winner admitting that he needs surgery to remove a cyst found on his vocal cords.

He replied: "Yeah, I genuinely am. I've got a cyst on my vocal chords. I'm having that taken out, which is going to be mad because it means I have three days of vocal rest."

While it might be tough for Thompson to stay completely quiet, NHS advice suggests that you shouldn't speak at all during this period to ensure that your vocal cords can recover properly.

It states: "For the first three days after the operation, we recommend that you do not speak or use your voice at all. This is to allow healing time for the surface of your vocal cord or cords around the site of the surgery."

Even whispering, humming and laughing should be avoided, which again won't be easy for Thompson given his bubbly personality.

Last year, Thompson already opened up about his autism and ADHD diagnosis, having admitted to struggling with disorganisation, hyperactivity and inattention throughout his life.

In an Instagram post, he wrote: "I don’t talk about my ADHD too much on here, to be honest, not nearly enough. I work in an environment where my ADHD is celebrated as part of who I am, and I am incredibly lucky.

"However, I also know that this is not the case everywhere, especially in schools. I remember being younger and feeling different and not understanding why.

"When I was in school, I wished I had someone to tell me that I was ok, and someone to tell me that it wasn’t because I was stupid, I didn’t care, and that I was intentionally not paying attention.

"It was because I had undiagnosed ADHD. I really hope that I can be a small part of young people accepting themselves for who they are, neuro diverse or not."
