Poor man who returned £570 after finding it in taxi gets even bigger reward

Isaac Kwesi Ackon found some money in his taxi, but immediately knew that he had to do the right thing

A taxi driver who found a load of money in the back of his cab and decided to return it ended up getting an even bigger reward for his kindness and honesty.

Here's the moment the person who had lost it realised what had happened, if you're looking for something heart-warming to watch today:

In 2022, Isaac Kwesi Ackon found the large sum of cash totalling around £570 in the back of his taxi after a passenger left it behind accidentally.

It must have been a nerve-wracking time for the passenger who had lost the money, but luckily their driver is an honest bloke and an all-around nice guy, so he brought it back for them.

His actions were widely praised in his home country Ghana, with musicians and politicians chipping in to offer praise and to provide him with a reward for his efforts.

However, Ackon said that the decision to return the cash to the rightful owner wasn’t even a tough moral dilemma for him.

"I saw the money in my car after closing down from work but after consulting my wife briefly about it, I decided to return to cash.

"The simple reason is that I don't take things that are not mine," he said.

The passenger was obviously delighted to get her money back.

Admirable stuff.

Many people would have to wrestle with themselves for a while before giving the money back, if they decided to give it back at all.

Not Isaac though, even though he could certainly have used some extra money.

Speaking to BBC Pidgin last year, he revealed that he’s been struggling a bit for cash himself of late, finding it difficult to earn enough to feed his family and keep his car – which is old and struggling – going.

Still, the father-of-three knew that giving it back was the correct thing to do, and did so without so much as a moment’s hesitation.

Once he found the money, he set straight about tracking down the passenger who had left it, realising that it must have been a local fishmonger called Teshie.

Ackon simply said he knows not to keep what isn't his.

When she realised that he’d come back to bring her the money, she broke out in tears of joy and expressed her relief that she had found him.

Obviously, she also gave him a massive hug.

The whole moment was captured on video, with Teshie seen to repeatedly thank Isaac and telling him ‘God bless you’.

Then the neighbours even came out to crowd around and pay their own thanks to him.

One said: "We thank you, God.”

Another said: "We haven’t slept all night.

“We are grateful you returned it, Sir.

“Thank you very much."

Isaac Kwesi Ackon has been thanked for his kindness.

His story buzzed around the entire country, with a fundraiser being set up to help Isaac out and to make sure he gets the gratitude he deserves for his selfless actions.

Ghana’s vice-president Mahamadu Bawumia donated £1,355 to him, whilst musician KiDi put his hand in his pocket to offer £340 to Isaac for his good deed.

And former Ghana international football player Asamoah Gyan also made a donation to the fund.

Others have since donated, meaning that the amount he has received will massively exceed the money he gave back.

But, that’s the kind of reward that – even though he wasn’t expecting it – an act such as this one deserves.

It’s a tired old platitude, but in this case, what goes around comes around.
