A man has been arrested after being accused of dumping a husky on the side of the road and abandoning it.

Police say Luis Antonio Campos was captured on camera pulling over in El Paso, Texas and getting a 17-year-old to unclip the dog from a leash.

The teenager got back in the car and they slowly drove off not realising someone behind them was filming the whole thing.

Heartbreaking footage of the event shows the dog then chased after the vehicle probably wondering why it was being left behind.

The El Paso Times says Campos was tracked down two days later and was charged with animal cruelty. The teenager has also been charged with the same offence.

Campos reportedly told authorities that the husky was a stray dog in the neighbourhood and he was simply trying to 'relocate' it.

He also accused the dog of killing his neighbour's pet and destroying his garden, according to KFoxTV.

But the husky apparently would hang around Campos' home so much that he eventually started giving it food and water.

Regardless of Campos' motives, police said abandoning the dog is against the law.

A dog rescuer posted footage of the dog being dumped near Horizon City on social media, which ended up going extremely viral online.

Esmie wrote: "This heartbreaking scene is what happens day in and day out here. All those dogs y'all see me move out of state is for this exact reason, because heartless people don't think or care.

"They didn't measure the responsibility that being a pet owner requires and instead of, again taking responsibility, and reaching out for help from a rescue they opt to dump their poor dog.

"I am disgusted, I am furious, and I am heartbroken."

The only shred of good news from the story is that the husky at the centre of the scandal was taken to the Huckleberry Hound Rescue Group animal shelter to be checked out.

The dog, named Nanook, was eventually adopted by a family on the same day the footage went viral.
