A 23-year-old fitness influencer from Mexico died last week after undergoing a medical procedure to treat excessive sweating.
Odalis Santos Mena, 23, passed away in the Mexican city of Guadalajara on 7 July.
According to the coroner's report, her death was likely the result of the anaesthesia and a steroid she had taken.
Skin care clinic SkinPiel, where she received the treatment, claims she failed to notify them about taking the steroid.
According to local publication Plumas Atomicas, she has been offered treatment to reduce underarm sweating named MiraDry in exchange for promotion on her social media channels.
The treatment is said to work by using heat energy to remove sweat glands, along with promising to reduce body odour and underarm hair.
Tragically, she suffered a cardiac arrest after being anaesthetized, and staff at the clinic were unable to revive her with CPR, the New York Post reports.
Odalis had posted on Instagram Stories that she was undergoing the treatment shortly before she passed away.
Her cause of death was given as the combination of the anaesthesia with Clembuterol, creatine and oxandrolone she had taken.
Clenbuterol is a sympathomimetic amine used as a decongestant and bronchodilator, creatine is a natural substance used as a sports supplement, and oxandrolone is an androgen and anabolic steroid medication.
According to the Daily Mail, the clinic said it did all it could to save her and was unaware of the steroid she had taken.
It said: "Upon delivering the signed form to the doctor, he asked [her] again about substance use and [she] verbally reiterated that [she] had not."
The popular influencer from the city of Autlan de Navarro and often took part in fitness competitions. She had a following of almost 150,000 on Instagram.
She was elected Campeona Wellness (Wellness Champion) of Miss y Mr. Hercules 2019 (Miss and Mr Hercules 2019) and came second in two swimsuit contests last year.
She also won the Wellness Fitness Juvenil (Youth Wellness-Fitness) contest at the Mr. Jalisco Juvenil y Veteranos 2021 (Youth and Veteran Mr Jalisco 2021) event shortly before her death.
She was also studying for an undergraduate university degree in nutrition and was said to be in a happy relationship with personal trainer and nutritionist Victor Gomez Carreno.
His final tribute was heartfelt and it read: "Your actions in life, echo in eternity. I will take you with me forever short, it makes no sense to write here what I feel in my heart @odalis_sm, I love you."
