Paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren, who provided the inspiration for horror movie The Conjuring, has died at the age of 92.

The tragic news was confirmed in an emotional Facebook post by her grandson Chris McKinnell, who said she died 'quietly and peacefully'.

It read: "Last night my grandmother, Lorraine Warren, quietly and peacefully left us to join her beloved Ed. She was happy and laughing until the very end.

"She was my angel and my hero, and she will be deeply missed. Please join us in celebrating her life and honouring her beautiful soul. Remember to treasure those you love while you can. Thank you and God bless you all."

Alongside her husband Ed, Lorraine forged a career as one of the most well-known investigators of the paranormal and the occult.

The couple became involved in some of the most famous cases in the world, including the Amityville Horror hauntings and the Enfield Poltergeist, as well as the Annabelle doll - all of which inspired the Conjuring movies.

Lorraine and Ed - who passed away in 2006 - ran their Occult Museum which featured souvenirs from their many investigations.

Vera Farmiga, who plays Lorraine in the Conjuring movies, shared a heartfelt tribute for her 'dear friend'.

The actor wrote on Twitter: "My dear friend Lorraine Warren has passed. From a deep feeling of sorrow, a deep feeling of gratitude emerges.

"I was so blessed to have known her and am honoured to portray her. She lived her life in grace and cheerfulness. She wore a helmet of salvation, she dawned her sword..."

Lorraine's fans have also offered their condolences at her sad passing.

One person wrote: "I'm truly saddened to hear of the passing of Lorraine Warren. You were a paranormal icon and will be remembered. You've helped so many people in your life time."

Another said: "There are few people on this earth that have a genuine gift of being able to communicate with what we believe to be the other side. Lorraine Warren was one of those people. I had the pleasure of meeting her & it will be a meeting I'll never forget."

A third mourner added: "Rip Lorraine Warren. I visited with her, Judy and Tony a few years ago. What a warm and wonderful human being and a pioneer in the paranormal. She was filled with love and light."

Rest in peace.
