A man who received a £90 fine for driving in a bus lane was left in stitches when he saw the photographic evidence the council had provided: a woman wearing a 'knitter' t-shirt which the camera appeared to confuse for his vehicle's registration plate.

David Knight, 54, from Dorking, Surrey, was fined for allegedly driving in a bus lane 120 miles away in Bath, somewhere he knew he hadn't visited recently.

However, all became clear when he saw the hilarious evidence the council had provided to support the charge.

It turned out the camera had somehow managed to confuse a woman walking in a bus lane wearing a t-shirt reading 'knitter' with David's car.

David's personalised registration plate - KN19 TER - is a reference to his nickname 'Knighter'.

David's wife Paula said the council call handler 'burst out laughing' when she realised what had happened, and the council agreed to cancel the fine.

Paula, 54, told the Daily Mail: "The fine had already gone up from £60 to £90 because we hadn't paid within 30 days.

"Obviously no one had looked at the picture and it had been computer generated."

David added: "We've been laughing about it a lot. There was no way I was going to pay for a woman walking in a bus lane with a funny T-shirt on!"

It would be a bit harsh if David was fined for someone he didn't know walking in a bus lane 120 miles away, wouldn't it?

Something you might actually get landed with a fine for, though, is breaking a new motorway lane closure rule.

Drivers could face a £100 fine and three penalty points on their licence if they're caught driving in a lane that's been closed on a SMART motorway.

Thankfully it's pretty easy to tell if a lane has been closed, as it will have a big red X over the top of it.

Sharing the news on Twitter, National Highways said: "There's no eXcuse - don't ignore the red X.

"It's illegal to drive in a red X lane and motorway cameras can now automatically detect drivers who flout the law.

"You could receive a £100 fine and get three points on your licence. #KeepUsAllMoving."
