Rishi Sunak is set to deliver a covid-style announcement in an address to the nation this evening (11 January).

The speech, which marks the first of its kind since Sunak took over as the UK's Prime Minister, comes at a time of significant struggle across the country.

Alongside the cost of living crisis, the UK has been crippled by strikes from major public services including the NHS, the Royal Mail and the National Rail in recent weeks.

Although it's not known exactly what Sunak will be addressing in his talk from 10 Downing Street, it's likely he'll be focusing on his five promises for 2023.

These pledges include his aims to 'halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut NHS waiting lists and stop the small boats moving across the English Channel with illegal immigrants'.

In a teaser for the broadcast shared yesterday (10 January), he said: "Watch my first broadcast to the nation as Prime Minister, tomorrow on BBC and ITV."

The PM shared a teaser to his speech earlier this week.

In the clip that wouldn't look out of place in The Thick of It, the PM says: "I guarantee that your priorities will be my priorities.

"I will only promise what I can deliver. And I will deliver what I promise."

It's safe to say people don't have much faith left in the promises made by Sunak and the wider Conservative Party.

The comments section is filled with criticism, with one person writing: "I am so glad I have no children, because life is such a struggle even on your own.

"I despair for those who have families! Rishi... I'm sorry but your words mean nothing... empty promises, expenses scandals, etc."

"Unless you are announcing that you are RESIGNING, not interested," said another, while a third asked, "Will your tell us who is actually pulling your strings?"

A fourth added: "Who's priorities? Mine would be, reduce inflation, fund the NHS, return to EU and grow the economy by at least 4%, create safe routes for refugees, fix the Home Office! #ToriesDestroyingOurCountry."

For those who are interested in watching what Sunak has to say and perhaps relive some of the BoJo speeches we remember all too well from the pandemic days, the broadcast will air at 6.25pm tonight on ITV1 and ITVX.

The PM and the wider Conservative Party continue to receive criticism.

It will then play at 6.55pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and will most likely drop on the PM's social media pages too.

In other Sunak news, the PM recently announced his controversial maths to 18 plan, stating that he wanted everyone to benefit from education, like he has.

However, the proposal has been met with criticism from education experts, politicians, members of the public and even actor Simon Pegg.
