Roman Kemp Plans To Quit Showbiz Life After Health Diagnosis

Roman Kemp Plans To Quit Showbiz Life After Health Diagnosis

Radio host Roman Kemp has revealed he plans to quit showbiz within the next five years

Radio presenter Roman Kemp has revealed his plans to get out of the showbiz life within the next five years following a health diagnosis.

The 29-year-old host of the Capital FM breakfast show has opened up on his plans for the future after receiving a diagnosis of sleep apnoea, a disorder which causes breathing to stop and start while asleep.

Kemp's sleep apnoea has led to the radio star needing to wear an oxygen mask at night, the Daily Mail reports, leading him to joke that there's 'absolutely nothing sexy about going back to Roman Kemp's house'.

Instead of 'candles and mood lighting', potential visitors were more likely to get 'a Darth Vader impression into an oxygen tank'.

The radio star first thought he was suffering from narcolepsy, where a person falls asleep suddenly, before doctors diagnosed him with sleep apnoea.

Kemp said his current lifestyle of early starts, long hours and high-profile events was not likely to be healthy.

He said: "I have needed to take a realistic look at it and ask myself 'is this life making me happy? Is it making me healthy?' I am constantly trying to deal with that.

"I was saying to my best friend yesterday that my life is monotonous, and I feel like I'm on this constant treadmill of a city. I see it for what it is now, London is a dangerous place for someone's mental health.

"I want a decade on air at least. I would love to be able to say I did a decade on that show - whether my bosses will allow that I don't know."

He also admitted that being a celebrity 'doesn't interest me', and he's working to make money for his future rather than boost his own profile.

Kemp admitted some envy of former Radio 1 host Nick Grimshaw, who told him it would be 'tough but it's the most fun you will ever have' when he first got the Capital breakfast show gig.

The 29-year-old said seeing Grimshaw's life since he's left Radio 1 has made him 'so jealous' and caused him to take a look at his own lifestyle following his diagnosis.

Kemp joined Capital FM in 2014 and has been presenting their breakfast show since 2017.

He said he would like to complete a decade-long stint on the breakfast show before retiring to start a family, become a stay-at-home dad and pursue his dream of opening up a dog sanctuary.
