People can't believe what happened to the Minions during this evening's Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The iconic yellow little cartoon characters made an appearance during the opening ceremony tonight (26 July), and social media users can't believe how the segment went.

So far, the opening for the Olympics has featured countries entering on boats on La Seine, Lady Gaga putting in a first performance, and a French heavy metal band combining with a 'Les Miserables' inspired song and dance.

However, it was the appearance of the Minions that seems to have enraged users online, as the characters seemed to have drowned after their appearance.

People took to X to share their thoughts on the performance, with one user saying: "All those Minions just drowned to death and they’re just carrying on like nothing happened. Unacceptable behaviour from the French imo"

Another commented: "Turning on the Olympics opening ceremony to see an animation of minions nearly drowning in a sewer while Peyton Manning chuckles, followed by a cut to the French national anthem"

A third said: "The minions and Lady gaga together in the same show??"

And a fourth pointed out: "The Minions literally just destroyed the Mona Lisa by putting it into river. Yet I’m sure people will still want to celebrate them and laugh at their antics. I’m so f**king done"

The other main talking point of the Olympics opening ceremony was the appearance of 'Poker Face' star Lady Gaga, and her performance in the early stages of the ceremony.

Fans weren't pleased that a French singer wasn't in her place, as they quickly pointed out online.

Writing on X, one user said: "Does France not have any singers? Why is lady gaga the best choice for singing in french"

Another put: "Personally, I think that having Lady Gaga singing for you when she's not French, is cheating."

A third brutally commented: "I don't know if Lady Gaga sings French or if she sings in Sims language..."

However, others thought that she did alright.

Someone else said: "Okay but Lady Gaga singing in french?! Pretty good honestly. Her accent is pretty spot on."

A different user said: "We got lady Gaga and Zidane at the Olympic ceremony who else is next?"

Though Gaga has already performed, it was reported that she will also perform a duet alongside Celine Dion at some point during the opening ceremony - though they won't be paid for their efforts.

So though the 'Poker face' star has already made a grand entrance to this summer's games, expect her next appearance to be even more powerful.
