Details emerge after British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, with 'bright future' dies in horror crash
Tragic new details have emerged after British cyclist Finlay Tarling died in a horror crash at a major bike racing competition.
Tarling, the younger brother of Ineos Grenadiers cyclist Josh, was riding for the NSN Development Team and taking part in the eighth stage in the north of the country when the accident occurred.
Portuguese media has since reported the young cyclist was struck head-on by a vehicle inbetween Melgaco and Fafe, leaving him with serious and fatal injuries on Friday (14 August).
Major Tiago Machado of the National Republican Guard (GNR) told local media that the cyclist was in collision with a 'light goods vehicle'.

The Volta statement added: “This is not the time for speculation about the circumstances of the accident. The incident is being investigated by the GNR Command, which is responsible for rigorously establishing the facts.”
The race was neutralised after Tarling became involved in what was described as a 'serious accident' on the 166.8km route.
In a statement, the race organisers confirmed: “The organisation of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to announce the passing of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the 8th stage of the race.
“In light of this tragic event, the race will be neutralised until reaching Fafe and, as a sign of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony scheduled for today will not take place.”
NSN Development later withdrew from the remaining stages of the Volta a Portugal, with organisers saying Saturday's penultimate stage would continue 'in an atmosphere of profound mourning'.
“We all remain deeply shaken. Cycling is a sport that carries risks, but we are never prepared for a tragedy of this magnitude,” said a statement.
“Finlay lost his life. A family lost a son. A team lost a team-mate. Cycling lost one of its own. It is a tragedy that goes beyond the competition itself.
“As a sign of respect and mourning, the event’s main sponsors have agreed with the organisation to cancel all activities planned for the final two days.
“The race continues. There will be sporting competition, but there will be no celebration. This Saturday, the Volta rides for Finlay.”
"He will be deeply missed"
Meanwhile, the NSN Development Team issued a statement online which read: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today.
“Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend. Rest in peace, Fin.”
Finlay is the brother of Josh Tarling, who rides for UCI WorldTeam Netcompany–Ineos. He earned the top spot as the 2025 World champion in the points race.
After the incident, British Cycling also paid tribute on Facebook, and penned: “All of us at British Cycling are heartbroken to learn of the tragic passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today.
“Fin was a hugely talented rider with a bright future ahead, a loyal team-mate, and a brilliant young man. Our thoughts are with his parents and brother Josh at this devastating time. Rest in peace, Fin.”
