China were in prime position to take home gold in the Men's Artistic Team All-Around event if it wasn't for two big mistakes by one of their athletes.

24-year-old gymnast Su Weide's was visibly distraught after falling off the high bar twice at the Bercy Arena on Monday (29 July).

His team was deducted two points for both of his mistakes as China missed out on gold to their rivals Japan, who won by 0.532 points. Meanwhile, it was the US who took home the bronze medal.

BBC commentator Matt Baker said: "China had a buffer but it wasn’t big enough. That poor lad there. Three big deductions. What a shame for him. This is a brutal format, sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t."

Analysing the errors, gymnastics commentator Christine Still explained: "It just shows what the pressure is for everyone here.

"There was a slight moment at the start where Su Weide almost put his hand on the bar incorrectly.

"He did the very difficult moves but he did not get the grip twice and he fell.

"That could be really quite costly for China. Such drama here.

"This is true sport at its very best, so unpredictable."

Beth Tweddle, who won the bronze medal for Team GB on the uneven bars in 2012, also sympathised with the athlete.

She said: "The first fall was so uncharacteristic. Once you fall you’ve got to pick yourself back up.

"He did look like he twisted his knee a bit, but from the get go he looked very unsettled."

Viewers felt bad for the Olympian after he sat a few seats away from his team following the mistake.

One person tweeted: "I feel so so bad for Su Weide like the level that these athletes are competing and the pressure they are under is insane but Silver is still an amazing feat!"

Another added: "Praying for Su Weide’s mental health after this I'm sure it will never be easy and people are gonna point out again and again."

While a third viewer commented: "People need to leave this poor kid alone. He obviously feels horrible."

Someone else penned: "My heart is breaking for Su Weide. I hope he doesn’t take it too personal. But I fear he will."
