Olympian's teammates speak out on 'tough' situation after he confessed to cheating on girlfriend live on TV

Most people's first port of call in a relationship crisis is their friends - and it's no different for Olympic athletes, either.

Some of Sturla Holm Lægreid's teammates have revealed how he turned to them for advice after cheating on the 'love of his life' three months ago.

After scooping the bronze medal in the men's 20km individual biathlon race on Tuesday (10 February) at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Lægreid decided it was the perfect time to confess to his 'mistake'.

The Norwegian star, 28, tearfully told broadcaster NRK that he wanted to publicly apologise to his former flame - who he described as the 'most beautiful and kindest person in the world' - for being unfaithful.

Six months ago, he met this mystery woman, who he claims to be head over heels for - but three months later, Lægreid 'cheated on her'.

"I had a gold medal in my life," he said of the beau he betrayed after achieving Olympic glory and bagging the bronze. "I only have eyes for her.

"I don't know what I want to achieve by saying this... I wish I could share it with her."

"You have to admit when you do something you can't stand for, and hurt someone you love so much," the six-time biathlon world champion added.

Lægreid explained he was making the bizarre announcement shortly after stepping off the winner's podium at the Winter Olympics because he had 'nothing to lose'.

Putting his cards on the table, the sports star said: "If this gives me a tiny chance to tell her how much I love her, I'd rather commit social suicide on live TV just to get that little chance."

He explained he decided to 'drop this bomb' after his big race because his ex 'already hates' him, as Lægreid added: "I hope that maybe it can make her realise how much I love her."

For his sake, let's hope his public plea tugs on the heartstrings of the poor lady who he was unfaithful too.

I mean, it's not every day that an event as big as the Winter Olympics is overshadowed by affairs of the heart, is it?

Lægreid's fellow Norwegian biathletes have also broken their silence on their pal making such a personal revelation on the world stage.

Father-of-one Johannes Dale-Skjevdal, 28, told NRK that the Olympic athlete had previously confided in him about his relationship woes, while praising Lægreid for his honesty.

"We have known that, yes," Dale-Skjevdal said. "I don't have many comments about it now. It's good that he is open about it, and if he wants to talk about things, that's fine."

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Martin Uldal said he had been blindsided by his teammate's revelation - but remarked that he had picked up on the fact that Lægreid didn't seem himself.

Uldal said: "I've noticed a little bit about him, that he's been a little different, but I haven't really known why.

"I've thought it might just be a bit of nerves. It's very sad to hear. Really tough, tough situation."

It is believed that Lægreid owned up to cheating on his Mrs just last week, as he described the last seven days as the 'worst of his life'.

The identity of the athlete's lost love remains unknown and he said he wasn't going to divulge it, but he hopes there might be 'light at the end of the tunnel for both of us'.
