Stormzy has revealed why he deleted both his Instagram and Twitter two years ago.

Back in February 2020, the 'Know Me From' rapper abruptly and mysteriously deleted two of his social media accounts.

The move followed the day after he became the first person to receive a Black card from Greggs.

While one explanation could have been that Stormzy, real name Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr, simply found himself too busy munching steak bakes or demolishing yum-yums to attend to the platforms, the musician has since spoken out about exactly why he decided to quit social media and how he's been feeling since.

Stormzy explained that just after he came off social media in February, he had a European tour 'straight after' in March.

As part of the tour, he performed at an arena show in Denmark, in front of 'about 15,000 people'.

Speaking on the latest episode of Leaving Vibe Radio on Apple Music 1, the rapper said: "We done the show and I came off stage and I remember one of my first feelings was getting the clip of us to put on social media but I didn't have social media. I remember it being a weird feeling.

"Because that's what I would normally do anytime I've done something great, I'm gonna show everyone. And I remember thinking in that moment, 'That's ego, that's ego. That's probably validation'."

The rapper explained that the moment was 'a big lesson' for him 'in terms of what ego is and how you gotta kill ego'.

"I think that was probably my biggest moment of it. Because what is it that I'm trying to gain? Because that happened in real life," he reflected.

The fickle nature of social media and the use of it to boost one's own ego was subsequently why Stormzy decided to get rid of his two platforms.

He resolved: "It was a big turning point for me in understanding that there is an ego in man I need to kill because look how blessed we are."

I get why Stormzy ain’t on social media. I really really get it.

While he partly deleted his Instagram and Twitter in a bid to stop feeding his own ego, Stormzy also admitted to getting rid of the social media accounts to separate himself from 'noise' and help him feel 'normal'.

The musician continued: "Whether that be noise on the internet, whether that be noise in reality, whether that be noise in events.

"I'll just make active decisions to not be around noise. Because I feel that noise doesn't allow me to be normal.

"Because if I consume noise and energy all the time there's something that's not normal about that. So I think there's a degree of separation that's needed."

Everyday is a reminder why Stormzy left social media.

The musician also explained how he's 'very focused on reserving [his] right to be a human'.

He concluded: "I always say that whoever Stormzy the artist is, the world will drag that to whoever they want that to be or wherever they want that person to be.

"There's a man in there who needs to remain before the artist."
